One of my gerbils keeps mounting my other gerbil, chasing her around their cage and thumping her back legs at her. They’ve also been squeaking and humping a lot. I’ve checked multiple times and I’m 90% sure they’re both females. Why are they doing this? Are they in heat? I’ve been trying to find answers for almost a week now and I can’t really find anything that completely answers my question so I figured I’d ask here. I feel like I should also note that I adopted them for a PetCo about a month ago after they had been returned by a different family and the employees told me that they’ve been together for months and they haven’t had any babies before so they’re most probably the same sex and about 6-7 months old. The one that I assume is younger (based on size) is the one that is doing the thumping, chasing, and humping.

They are probably just in heat, but if you want to make sure they are both females, you could post a photo of them from underneath on here.
This is pretty classic behaviour for females in heat though.
