I undertook a project yesterday to add a topper to a tank. First time doing this, tank is around 22 gallons and the topper is the cage part of the Savic xl gerbilarium. The cage part was a bit too deep for the tank so I have used galvanised mesh to prevent escapes/stop my cats attacking! The mesh won’t be anywhere near the gerbil’s feet etc. I have acrylic sheets coming that will act as 2 shelves and these will be cable-tied in, and a wheel will either sit on a shelf or be suspended from the top. There will also be wooden bridges connecting the shelves and wheel. This may or not be a permanent cage yet as I am picking up a 30 gallon tank today that needs a repair and that may be the better option with a topper on that as well. I have recently rescued a clan and am picking up 2 gerbils today who have been advertised for free and I didn’t want them to end up as snake food or a Christmas present! So they will move in to this cage and possibly the 30 gallon once repairs have been made.

So I have scrapped the idea of repairing a broken 30 gallon and instead have ordered a 138l storage box that will have the topper on. The reason for this is a) the bin is cheaper and b) the bin is larger and lightweight. I will be keeping an eye for other options to keep as a spare then but glass tanks are just far too heavy so I am hoping the bin will be a good alternative
