Hello!! I'm about to get gerbils for the very first time so trying to collect as much info as possible. I currently have a 20 gallon long tank and most breeders have told me it's okay for a pair. However, I'm concerned about the gerbils not having enough space as other people have told me its too small. Is a 20 gallon long okay or much too little for them?

larger would be better, at least 40 gallon but you can start with this and see if you can find a second hand tank or a sale on bigger tank, a pair needs enough space but not too much. I have a single in a 30 gallon long and it isn't really big enough for him, he is elderly but still has some spunk in him.

It's generally considered now that for a pair of gerbils (that get on well) that they can't have too much space (aside from it taking up too much of your own space! lol). A smaller cage (e.g 20 gallons) could possibly keep a less well matched pair together, but that's hardly ideal. There's more info about it here at the 'Which size tank' FAQ, along with a link at the bottom of the article to some of the arguments about cage size.
