I saw some gerbils that next to my Rue at the pet store, looked slate to me. My mother thinks they might have been blues, as they were almost gray, but with black eyes so they couldn’t have been lilacs/sapphires. To me they just seemed extremely slate. I thought that Rue was a black, but if those might have been blues, then she may be a slate. Black and Slate colours confuse me so bad lol. Anyone have any answers?

A pet shop gerbil is very unlikely to be blue. A blue gerbil is a black gerbil with the dilute gene, and the dilute gene is only known to be in the hands of show/hobby breeders at the moment. Of course it isn't impossible that it's made its way to the breeders who supply pet shops, but unlikely at the moment. A dark but not quite black gerbil in a pet store is much more likely to be slate. Slate and black are quite easy to tell apart once you've seen both. Also, when a slate gerbil's eye catches the light it will glow red, whereas a black gerbil's eye is fully black. This was my Tilly who was slate. She's the darker gerbil in this photo. You can see the red tint in her eye. The other gerbil is a colourpoint slate. And this was my Rocket who was black. I believe blue is a far bit lighter than slate, even closer to lilac.

Interesting, I didn't even know a blue gerbil existed! I've just found pics of what are apparently blue gerbils here - gerbilhub.com/blue-gerbils/But they don't even slightly look blue to me! Look pretty much like a burmese
