I have 3 boys, Oakley, Woodland, and Lark, and I recently got to thinking, Woodland is the youngest by a decent bit, if Lark and Oakley pass before him, and he gets lonely, what should I do? Or is there nothing I really can do? Obviously I can’t get a new gerbil to introduce the old guy to. Hopefully none of my gerbils will pass any time soon, but they are a little over 2 years now, which is on the slight older side for gerbils, so I thought I would see what anyone else would do. I don’t want Woodland (or any of the others) sad and lonely if they’re the last one alive for a while. Do old gerbils do fine alone usually? I’ve heard of quite a few grumpy old lonesome gerbils that lived just fine by themselves.

Obviously I can’t get a new gerbil to introduce the old guy to. Sure you can , why did you think otherwise? Do old gerbils do fine alone usually? They can do ok, but you won't really know until sometime passes. But even if they do, they would likely be happier with a buddy (assuming they aren't the rare anti-social type! lol). My Blake is over 2.5 yrs old, he's been by himself for a little over a month now, he seems just fine still but I will be introducing him to 1 or 2 pups soon (once he's healed more from the surgery he had recently). Oh btw, prior to him being a loner, him and Avon were in a permanent split (as they'd declanned twice when younger), so he was somewhat used to (kind of) living alone. Though they often said hello to each other through the mesh divider

Oh, I didn’t think old gerbils could be introduced to new ones once they were already bonded to a few others, but that is good to know! Thank you!

No probs Previous bonding doesn't seem to be a limit to future bonding as far as I've read. But some people and organisations (e.g Swiss animal welfare) recommend not to intro gerbils that are 3yrs or older (due to the stress), but some people have done so anyway with success. The thought being if you have a fit, healthy and active 3yr old (so a 'young' 3yr old) then they'll probably be fine for an intro. But anyway, your gerbil is much younger
