Most of us have probably noticed at some point the Chat tab on the toolbar, which no longer contains anything. Does anyone know what this used to be? Some kind of live chat?
Shouldn't it be removed since it's no longer active?

Yes it was a live chat section, I stumbled across a log of the chat somewhere (I'll see if I can find it again, and make it linkable, if possible). It seems it was active somewhere around 2011. I think it became a cost option, hence it was dropped. Or maybe not, I found a chat log in the admin section, but it's for something called 'Shoutbox', which looks like it was a live chat anyway, I'm just not sure if that was the chat function itself... The last 200 shouts (recorded to a log for management) ran from May to August 2013. This is the description of the Shoutbox within the admin section - ' Turn this forum's shoutbox on or off, edit its settings, and manage its recent activity. The shoutbox is visible from any page on this forum, and allows users to easily and quickly chat with each other.' And the option is there for me to turn it back on, but I'm not keen to seeing as we don't know why it was turned off (I don't recall this being discussed in the mod forum section). (For any admin or mod who wants to take a look at the shoutbox, it's in Admin Control Panel > Settings > Shoutbox). The Chat section is within Structure > Custom pages, so I guess it is something different to the shoutbox.... Btw, clicking on the 'Java Chat Software' link shows that it costs ~$15/month. And it looks like I could delete it, although I wonder if there was a reason to keep it there after the chat room stopped? Shooting Star

Live chats between two or three members can be fun - because they usually overlay the threads you are chatting about right there and then - but it could take some really useful data off the forum. But then I suppose the private messaging does that too but many people still use that - it's more like an email format though I suppose (where you are expecting a delay in the reply).
If the other one is potentially free - perhaps if we wanted to - we could try a Chat Month - maybe over easter holidays when more people are not working just to see what happens with it?

I believe the shoutbox is free, found more info on it here. This is the description of it from there :- The Shoutbox is an integrated live, instant messaging chat room for your forum. Since the Shoutbox is not designed as a permanent means of posting messages, shouts are not archived. However participants will be able to view up to 20 of the most recent shouts.
The Shoutbox displayed in the admin panel is the same live Shoutbox that is displayed on your forum, with the exception that 200 of the most recent shouts are shown allowing for you to review the shouts.Makes me think even more that the Chat tab we have is totally redundant, and just a leftover from pre shoutbox days. I've PMed shootingstar on FB asking about this.

I honestly have no idea. I never used any of the chat features that may have been available.

Ah ok, lol, no worries Well in that case I think I'll delete it. I'll see if I can copy the code for it here, just in case their was any reason it was kept. <center> <applet code="Client.class" codebase="http://client4.addonchat.com/current/" archive="scclient_en.zip" width="600" height="425" alt="Java Chat Software - AddonChat" MAYSCRIPT> <param name="room" value="188307"><param name="username" value="$[current_user.name]"> <param name="autologin" value="yes"><a href="http://www.AddonChat.com/">Java Chat Software</a> </applet></center>
Well that didn't work as planned, lol, I'll have to fix that later.

Yes, it doesn't seem very useful for a forum of this size, especially if it costs money.

But we could enable the shoutbox instead, which is free, and appears to be a similar thing.
Btw, removed the chat tab now.

Randomly popped into this thread.... I honestly have no idea. I never used any of the chat features that may have been available. Are you sure? Great idea! But... is the chat footer slowing anyone else's computer way down? I don't mind the comp being slow when I'm actually using the chatroom, but the footer is slowing things down when I'm reading threads, too. Ok that was 16yrs ago heheh
