Well, both seem to be improving, but not equally.
FWIW, I'm not big on pet names, and I generally referred to them as "the black" or "black and white" one and "the brown one," but the vet needed names for their system so I used the names I gave them but don't generally use: Oreo and Nutmeg.
So, Nutmeg was the first one at the vet's, then Oreo, and it was Oreo who had the vet's concern before surgery. But he came out the best and was easy to care for: I mixed his meds in with Critical Care and he gobbled them down. Nutmeg was the one refusing food, and I ended up more than giving him his meds via a syringe.
But with time--and maybe the change of the antibiotics--he started taking applesauce, which I mixed with Critical Care for added nutrition, and I put their meds into it and literally spoon fed them. So this has been working the last four-five days, though I'd have to give the stuff to Nutmeg several times over an hour or two before he finished it.
Funny how their tastes have diverged: though they have their regular mix, I'm supplementing with whatever I can to feed them. Nutmeg won't touch peanut butter but likes shelled pepitas, while Oreo loves peanut butter but won't eat the pepitas. Oreo will eat freeze dried banana pieces, while Nutmeg has taken them once. And so on.

How's things now Scott, after a few days to settle down?
Hopefully their tastes have evened out and you know who likes what now...

I'm curious too Scott Btw, did they completely remove the SG from them, or just the part with the tumour?

Hi Scott,
I hope everything's going OK with your boys... how are they doing?

Sorry for the delay. Both have recovered, though it was particularly difficult to get one to eat; his weight had dropped 10% by the time I brought him to the vet for his followup. Even when it seemed I'd found something he'd eat, within a day or three he'd then decide he didn't want it anymore.
But both have come back close to their old normal, though even with all the treats I shower on them, they're certainly not overweight.
They still both go crazy over cantaloupe seeds, though.
Thanks for the concern.

Hey Scott.
That's great to hear they're doing better! Funny, my gerbs have never appreciated cantaloupe seeds in the slightest! I guess treats can really be a mixed bag with them. I am curious, if you don't mind me being nosey. Did they remove the whole scent gland or only the part with the tumor? Anyways, good luck to you and your boys. I hope everything goes great!

Cantaloupe/melon seeds are very similar to pumpkin seeds. I bought a melon the other day and the gerbils enjoyed some of the seeds along with the melon "innards".
