Crazycritter asked to see my new setup, so I figure I'd post it for everyone. I basically just added another story to 3 of my 4 tanks using a wire cage. Aris and Indira's tank: Jasper and Aspen's tank: Rowan and Astra's tank: (Yay, 3 stories ;D) Nova and Logan's tank: (Doesn't look much different, but you may be able to see the glass jar tunnels on the bottom of the upper tank - actually there is a gerbil in one of them)

Also, why don't they fall down when they climb through that metal tube attaching the two aquariums? It looks pretty vertical-- is there something to hold on to? Just trying to think of how I could expand my own set-up. thanks again!

Queenie, Once again I bow to you oh great one! ;D You are amazing. I know that the gerbils love their environment.
I am perplexed.... When they tunnel, how do they breathe? You said you have a glass jar on the bottom of one with a gerbil in it but do you have tubing to the tunnel? Do you use aspen or carefresh?

devun: that metal tubing is actually aluminum dryer exhaust. It is kind of like an accordion, with millions of tiny pleats that the gerbils can hook their nails in. I've also bent it a bit so that it isn't entirely vertical. Within about 10 minutes, my gerbils figured it out and they love running up and down!
sweetie: I use Aspen. I put some jars and lots of cardboard tubes and pieces of pvc pipe in there so that they can make their own tunnels. If a bit of shavings falls into the tunnel, the gerbils can just dig their way out again.

Humane society garbage bin . Crazycritter, if I find them throwing one out I'll snag it for you. I could watch for a good price on one that they are selling, if you'd like. How much would you be willing to pay for one of the large cages? Are you looking to make an addition on your 20 gallon?

I'm looking to make an addition to EVERYTHING. I just have limited room, money, and cooperation from my parents
