Just curious on gerbil weight. I have one that is a lightweight of 60 and another topping 90-100 grams. Who has the heaviest gerbil?

My heaviest adult was 108 g. Lightest was right around 60 g as fully mature but still young adult.
Clarification: the heaviest was a male around 1 year of age; the lightest was a female at around four months of age.

Hmm, I can't vote in the poll - my gerbils are between 50 and 55 g.... still Adding more fatty foods didn't work

Woah, just have to say, that's one big gerbil! The heaviest I've ever owned was 130+ grams (he was genuinely big-boned ;D) He was built like a barrel and had lots of muscle. 'You're a big fellow aren't you!' exclaimed his old vet, when he all-but lunged at her out of his travel-tank (his preferred method of greeting).

Most of mine are around 90-100grams. One was 110 at his heaviest - he's slimmer now!

I believe the stated weight for lab gerbils is 65 to 70g
But remember that breeders like Ed and myself will tend towards large, healthy gerbils for breeding so it is inevitable that pet gerbils will get bigger on average.
But there is a different between large and fat.
I suspect the small, lightweight gerbils are the result of less selective breeding.

What lab study is that Gill?
From various pooled studies they reckon that Adult gerbils can weigh about 70 upto 135 g. Pups at birth weigh about 2.5 g and are normally weaned at 14 to 18 g. An acceptable weight gain for the postweaning period from 3.5 to 7 weeks is 1 g/day. These figures are gleaned from the studies of Gulotta (1971), Thiessen and Yahr (1977),

Did it mention what they were fed on? If it was standard rodent lab block then no wonder. And I plead guilty to choosing the biggest, healthiest pups as breeding stock.

Ben is now about 110g, Charlie around 100 g, and Angus (who excels at wheel-running) is a svelte 80g. I'm not sure just how much each of the girlies weighs, as they'll not stay still on the scale! Linda
