I don't know why, but the reply button in the other thread is missing. I've never seen that happen before, and all the other threads are fine. Thank goodness Peter comes back tomorrow, maybe he can explain.
khelket, are you talking about glass jars, rather than bottles? You can use a medium-sized masonry jar under the shavings and they will dig in it and use it like a burrow. I haven't found any problems with moisture.

Yeah, this is a reply to that thread as well:
I use milk cartons as houses. I don't know about Cows milk since I don't drink it, but I know that if you wash out a soymilk container and cut off the top (where it's folded, and where you pour from) It's fine. They really like them. I also give them a lot of boxes...anything, really. Cereal boxes, popsicle boxes, granola bar boxes, etc. Even scraps of cardboard and paper. I don't buy them store bought toys anymore. They seem to like boxes just as much.

Do you worry at all about the wax on the cartons? I've been avoiding using the soymilk cartons because of this. I guess the containers still hold food for human consumption, so it should be safe if accidently ingested... Hmmm, we go through lots of soymilk, so I'd really love to use the cartons.

I was a bit worried about the wax, but really, wax isn't poisonous and it's not like the gerbils eat the cartons. I figured that if they DO ingest a little bit, it won't be enough to hurt them. I've been using them for two years, and I haven't had any problems.

Okay, now I just have to finish the milk ;D. I made the same sort of decision about coconut shells last year. Some members on the GML felt the coconut fibers were too long and could cause obstruction. The shells I have are so old and hard that the gerbs can't even chew them. I just decided that the risk was minimal and let the gerbs have their fun!

I saw a coconut shell at PetSmart for $8. I said " WOW I could buy and eat 4 coconuts for that price and then they would have 4 times more fun chewing and playing. I am also nervous about wax on boxes and the glue on the paper towel rolls. I guess if our mothers where as concerned, we would never have been let out of the house LOL!!
