I have a query about housing. I noticed the hamster dunas that Andrea had pictures of are mini dunas. I have been thinking about getting a hamster duna for my gerbils oscar and rasmus.I just wonder if it is going to work. Their cage is larger than a mini duna so that would not be an improvment, except from the higher base- I had a look at the bigger duna in a pet shop. It measures 70x40x30, about the size of a 20 gallon tank. For several reasons I don't wish to get another aquarium. Will they just chew a hole in it eventually or what? I was worried about the hole for the bottle being high up on the wall, and if they kick away bedding they would not reach it. So I'm not sure if I want this kind of cage... but I don't know Oscar would react to the cage having tubes connected to another unit, since he sometimes get seizures when he is experiencing stress. Maybe he would freak out if he got stuck in the tubes or something ? Also their cage only has one door.(I was thinking I'd use that option for my two females) So what do you think?

Hi, For us personally the dunas are great. We have had upto now no escapees or chewing of the dunas. I have heard of people getting escapees from chewing the holes the water bottle is inserted into. But that usually happens if you forget to put the bottle back in. If you get one that comes with the "sippy" bottle don't use it we have brought a few dunas now and everyone leaks. Use the normal ones attach it using the wire and suckers provided. you can also get bigger "duna " style cages, we have recently brought a Cretico Gabber which is a different make but the same idea and is slightly bigger. you can get them big enough for a guniea-pig Andrea

Blackie,
What you might want to try if you do notice them pushing the bedding away is putting a metal or glass container under the spout (they will not be able to chew it) so that it will be there to climb up onto. They are pretty smart critters and will do what they can to get at the water.
I also love the cages Andrea has. I still have yet to find them in any petstore around us. It is enclosed and contains the mess, looks easy to clean and allows visibility of the gerbils and also enough space for burrowing.

Hi, The ferplast dunas have now been discontinued by ferplast. But pets at home (formally petsmart) now sell savic cages which are the same idea. There is alsorts of makes now around. They are very easy to clean also, you just take thetop part off put the bottom in a bin bag and tip!, very easy. We also have glass tanks for our jirds and we had our first escapee this evening and that was a bushy escaping from a glass tank he managed to chew his way out of the lid by standing on the water bottle.. the bugger. My dad had to come round and disconnect the washing machine and pull it out So glass tanks are no sure way of protecting against escapees either LOL .. Andrea

I don't think they sell those in the US. A quick i-net search turned up a lot of UK sites and a bunch in foreign languages I couldn't read, but nothing in the US.

Okay so you are confident that a duna can work and will last more than two months...good! I actually noticed that they had one ferplast duna left in a pet shop in my town. But it was in the most expensive pet shop in the area + it had a red base and I'm not very fond of red(not the shade that ferplast uses anyway). So I'll probably wait a while and see if anything else is available.

our oldest duna is still going strong after 2 years ;D
Thats weird that you can't get them in the US.. I would of thought if you can't get the ferplast one you could get a different make but the same thing??.

I did a little more checking and couldn't come up with anything on Cretico Gabber at all. There were a good many listings for Savic, but again all the sites were either based in the UK or European countries. I've been to probably over a hundred US sites that sell gerbil and hamster cages and I've never yet seen the Dunas or anything that's even remotely like them. They must be sold strictly in Europe and the UK.

Well I have looked at Ferplast's Euro website, and their dunas are still listed there. Maybe it's just that they don't sell them in the USA? I'm Norwegian, by the way. I also looked at Savic's website and the Savic Rody has this great minus that the bottle is on the inside...So, I don't know. I guess you could always get a guinea pig enclosure at put some mesh cover on that. Anyway, I'd love the light blue hamster duna from ferplast if I could find it in a pet shop. Why not just go for it? Maybe I can ask a pet shop if they sell ferplast cages and if this cage is available.

I had made up my mind. Yesterday I went to the pet shop and I bought a tourqouise (difficult word to spell ) ferplast duna. It's going to be the new home for Oscar and Rasmus. I haven't moved them into it yet. Wonder how they will react. Oscar will probably be scared at first. I decided not to ge the guinea-pig size duna anyway. 1.) too expensive 2) a bit impractical 3.) I don't drive. I think the mini duna is big enough for a couple of gerbils. So it's going to be exciting to see how they will like it in there. It will propbably get a bit hot in the summer. Maybe I should keep the old cage and they could stay there on hot summer days. Or maybe I'll sell it...

And they had Gabbers too in that pet shop. It was similar to the ferplast duna but maybe slightly taller ,and I don't think it had a hole for the water bottle. But I had already made up my mind I wanted the ferplast duna ;D Andrea was right, the weigh almost nothing but the lid rattles a lot. I have figured out why Ferplast products may not be available all over the US....it's an italian company, so maybe there are other companies there, like Hagen.
