I'm glad to hear that I'm not the only one dismayed at the attitude of pet shops. Pet's At Home where unbelievably rude to me when I attempted to buy pups to introduce to my adult male. When I tried to explain that there is a procedure (that doesn't always work) they practically called me an abuser!!! The fact that the staff didn't know anything about the split cage method, or for that matter, how old their gerbils were when they came into the store just reflected how ignorant of the subject they were!!! I complained via email to their headoffice and got some crap apology stating that if I tell them I intend to house the pups seperately I can have them!!! Hypocritical or what? They also said that they have a duty of care to their pets - what they meant was as long as I said the right thing I would be sold anything I wanted! - Laughable really. As a member from another thread said, it is highly unlikely that the NGA would endorse the split cage method if it was detrimental to the health of gerbils! That same member of staff is probably still spouting rubbish to prospective owners and giving them the wrong info.

The stupidity of humans is terrable... Both PETsMART and PetCo around me are pretty good. I got my male, Keebler, from PETsMART. When the lady opened the cage door so I could see how they interacted with her, Keebler JUMPED into her hand. His friends all came over to the door to say hi, but he kept climbing and jumping into her hand. They were handled pretty nicely. They both use either CareFresh, or Aspen. They sell pine and all that other stuff, but I've never seen them use it before, and they've never reccomended it to me. They've never NOT reccomended it, but when I asked, they showed me other (friendly) options. I got mice from PetCo. They were 'feeder mice' but I got them as pets, to save them from a terrable fate. The guy grabbed them by the end of their tails... Personally, I like a little place called Hols Feed and Seed. They have rabbits, guinepigs, rats, birds, gerbils, Adoption kittens... I'm not sure about the birds and bunnies, but I know that rats, hamsters, guinepigs and gerbils they breed them selves. I got my female from them. They're kept in tanks with lids, but they all have a wheel and a waterbottle and a food dish. There's always a lot of bedding, and it's always clean. Not usre how much they play with their pups, but Ritzie (my female) was pretty easy to pick up, and she was pretty healthy. Nice fur and eyes, and she'd look right at you. They lady even gave me some good tips about pairing the two. I love that store.
