Hey everybody,
I see in the stores all the time those little Potty training things for hamsters. But on one of the boxes I noticed a Gerbil poking his head out, is it possible to potty train a gerbil.

yes gerbils will prefer to use the litter to the sawdust just the same as they will use a sandbath BUT they will also chew the loo up lol

For a litter pan, I use a ceramic dog dish with play sand. Some of my gerbs use it all the time, others rarely use it at all.

ive found that my gerbils like to poo as close to the top as they can get maybe if you made a little platform with a ramp or something that went a bit higher then every thing else and put the tolit up there, they might use it.

Great idea Pookie, as long as the dish can't fall on some ones head.
I was wondering the same thing and noticed that mine where pooping in almost the same place all the time. It makes for easy claen up and less frequent thorough cleanings!!

My two gerbs have DEPLORABLE bathroom habits. They go anywhere, anytime. In their favorite digging spot? Yep. In the food dish? Sure. In the running wheel? All the time. They climb up on top of their little wooden house and pee down the side. Today I looked in on them sleeping in their nest, and the darned thing is littered with poop. In their nest, for crying out loud. It makes cleaning up after them quite time-consuming. Most of the time I have to change and scrub the entire tank every Sunday because it starts to smell like ammonia and I feel bad when I see them rolling around and chewing on dirty shavings. I sure wish they'd get their excretory act together -- maybe they think they're mice.

Mine like heights too, they always go to the bathroom in the tube set Which is nice because the tank never stinks or is used as a toilet, but then I have to clean the tubes out all the time. But I guess that's easier then the entire tank every 4 days ;D One of the groups is nice enough to only use the look out tower as a toilet, so I don't have to dismantle all the tubes to wipe it out.

Mine don't go in the highest place -- probably because i often put their treats up there. They usually urinate in the sand bowl (poo is anywhere, but not as much of a problem). But they frequently pee on the wheel as well, which i find a mystery? It is up fairly high though....

Well I'm glad to know that Bucky and Ginger aren't as defective as I thought. ;D
I'm always amazed when I read posts from people who only change their gerbs' tank once a month. How lucky they are to have such tidy little pals! If only there was some sort of potty training video for rodents...

Oh, and I'm potty training my pup with this stuff actually for dogs called Swiftie. I had the smell on my hands, and he pooped straight away.
