Gah, my mum said I can't have two gerbils. and I really don't have enough time to spend with one gerbil in order to act as a playmate because I have a school, a youth group, badminton and other things to do (Don't get me wrong, I wouldn't neglect it, I just wouldn't be able to simulate it's playmate.)
I will have to get a hamster. Oh well, hams are cute too. =)

That's sad! But I guess Hamsters are fine. That cage would work for a hamster.... but in my opinion, they smell more! My boyfriend's sister has 1 hamster in a 10gal tank, and it smells more than the 3 gerbils that I gave to their brother!! Also, that cage you showed, all the plastic would likely be gone and shredded into little pieces in less than a month. I couldn't imagine living in a town sooooo small that they don't have an actual pet store! And a walmart that doesn't sell JUST a tank! WOW! What's your population? I graduated from a town where the high school was nearly 1500 kids! Plus there's lots of other little storess and a mall, and a PetCo AND a PetsMart! ;D I LOVE IT! Don't forget though that you can certianly buy "just" a tank from online at www.petco.com or www.petsmart.com or even www.walmart.com

I would purchase online, but I would prefer to buy it locally so there is no fuss if the cage is broken or missing parts. My population is around 50, 000. Yes, we do have an actual pet store, but they do not sell just plain aquariums unless you want to buy the same price as a kit. It's city, too. xD The reason there is no Petco or Petsmart is because half of the city's population is temporary (meaning they live in Calgary or Edmonton or even another province and travel to Ft. McMurray for more money for 6-7 months). Since most people work at the oil plants with long long hours, they have no time for pets. So Petco and Petsmart have not made a business up here. It was only 4 years ago we got a Wal-mart.

Good luck with your hamster! I have one of those too, a little siberian. Once you tame them up, they are super critters. Yeah, they can stink a lot more, but I use that Carefresh Ultra bedding, it's really neat for the critters too, they can burrow into it.

:)Can you put tape in the gerbils cage? I want to try something. No! Definitely not. I don't think that they can really digest tape so it would probably block up their digestive track. -Jeremiah

1. Can you list me the bare necessities they need? Just so I can think up the prices for it all? Food, bedding carefresh or aspen or corncob, toys(can be simple as toilet paper tubes), a good cage-not wire bottomed very harmful and cardboar would be chewed out within hours.
2. Are they nocturnal? No they are active day and night.
3. Must they be kept in groups of two? (This may be an issue with my parents.) yes males and females have to have a friend they do not do well by themselves as they are very sociable animals. How would you like to be alone all your life?
4. Can they live in wire cages if cardboard is threaded through the floor to protect feet and if there is sufficient bedding? I cannot afford a tank and a tub is too inconvienent. Tanks are the best option and I would not recomend a wire bottomed cage for any animal it is very damaging. They can chew through the cardboard and need it to be replaced every few days. Can you do that for them?
5. Is Carefresh bedding okay? I have heard a few people using it with success.
6. Do gerbils need sand baths? yes.
7. I can't use hamster balls for them, can I? There are gerbil balls, they are a little larger than the hampster balls. Some love them and some freak out when put in them so it depends on the gerbil.
8. Is there any way I can bring them outside for a run and still keep them within reach such as a home-made leash (the storebough ones hurt animals) or a hamster ball? I do not recomend outside trips. But I may just be over protective of my babies, lol!

on the leash front...I don't think you'd get a gerbil to stay on a leash
