Do you mean in the same sort of setup you'd use for a reptile? RW

You can use it, but don't use the lamp! Than it can get too hot inside! And make sure that the tank has ventilation.

It wasn't terrarium for reptiles, but lighted aquarium for fishes (I kept here guppies), but there was a fish epidemy, so all guppies died, surviwed only one male. (It wasn't first time with this epidemy, and always from about 100 guppies surviwed only 1 - 5). So I decide to remove last guppy, and dont keep them longer. (Last male will spend rest of his life, with peaceful african dwarf clawed frogs.) Now I want to keep gerbils in this aquarium, but I will of couse remove this cover, and search new (I don't want to cook them!) I cant remove only a lamp becauce there will be very dark in aquarium (this cover is made from fat, black plastc).
Sorry for ewentual mistakes, I live in Poland.

Oh, I see. Aquariums are great homes for gerbils. Just be sure to clean it well, using a little bleach in the water, and rinse it well, too. I don't know what's available to you, since you're in Poland, but several companies make wire screen lids for aquariums. This is what you need. They may be in either the small animal or reptile sections of the pet stores and they're also available many places online. What size is your aquarium? RW

If you look on top of this aquarium, the top metal is called 'wire screen'. You can staple this wire screen/mesh to wood and form a lid.

Wire screen lids are imposible (or very hard) to buy in Poland, but popular with small mammals. I want to make something like that by myself (it's only way) , since you told that lamp is bad for gerbils. (We call it "pokrywa z siatki" )

It is important that the "netting" or wire mesh is strong enough, so the gerbils can't chew holes in it, and the space betwewen the holes in the mesh should be about 5mm to 1cm. (Am I right here?)

OK. I am back. My parents finally let me buy gerbils. I found something what could be a cover for gerbils terrarium, but holes in this are 18 milimetres spread. Can gerbils go trought this holes, or it will be good cover? P.S. Next time I will register, and I will be Radek.

Hi Radek. I used to keep my pet newts in what is now my gerbil terrarium. I eventually got rid of the newts because they obviously werent very friendly. So same sort of thing.... also, my guppies died too. Good luck with your last one. Happy Gerbilling! ;D

Hi Radek As long as they are not able to get their little heads through the cover, your gerbils should be safe, but the best thing is to get mesh that is a little tighter than chicken wire. If they start to chew a lot on the wire, you should change it. It will probably work temporarily anyway, just keep an eye on them.

I am back, and I just have bought pair of mongolian gerbils . Female has black eyes, light brown (maybe even yellow) back, and brown (auguti) belly, and male look like normal auguti. (I dont know what call colours of this female). She was realy hard to buy. In Poland, most zoo shops sell only auguti and black gerbils, sometimes difrend, but they often have red eyes. They are very young, and quite small, but enough big to surviwe withoud mother (and enough big to be a good digers ). I am very happy They are realy beatiuful, and even more nice, than I thinked. Now I must give them names.
