Your cats will probably be quite interested, but as long as you keep the gerbils in a safe and secure environment, you should be fine. I recommend aquariums because less gerbil scent gets out to entice the cats, and less damage can be done because the cat can't get it's paw in.

How does the plastic connect to the base? (we don't have Dunas in Canada, so I'm unsure) Does the connection seem sturdy and safe to you? I think Andrea or another member in the UK would best be able to answer your question.

Hmmm... I would say that aquariums would be safer.

Hi Gracie,
I have a cat who likes to watch them (when he is in the house) and is very curious but does not do any thing. Of course I never let them out when he is in the house!! My dogs whine all the time to get near the gerbils and check them out. ANy time the gerbils get up and start to make noise, the dogs are right there by the gate watching them!! Again, I never let the gerbils out when the dogs or cat are in the house!!

my cats just see gerbils as toys....they can't be trusted. if i don't watch her closely enough, one of my cats will even pounce at them when they are in their tank. (i dont think she sees the glass...she isnt very smart.) this actually moves the heavy glass tank...which is why something light and plastic isnt as cat-proof.
i read somewhere that if you introduce them when they are kittens, the kitten will be nice and become friends with the gerbil (or hampster...which is what i was actually reading about) but i wouldnt believe that for a second....the younger the cat the more they see everything that moves as a toy.

I have 3 cats and 2 gerbils. I keep the gerbils in my room with the door closed. I sometimes let the cats in to investigate but kick them out if I'm leaving the room or if they start getting too excited.
It's funny, they'll scratch at my door for hours meowing.
But I definately wouldn't leave them alone with them. I have a small wire/plastic cage, but even if I had a glass cage I wouldn't, doubt the gerbils appreciate that. Once I went to answer the door and left the cats int here, came back and they were all over the cage one was completely on top of the cage. Good thing I wasn't gone long. Never leaving them alone again!
