Your gerbils are Jirds! All Jirds are Gerbils, but not all Gerbils are Jirds. The Mongolian Gerbil, is also known as the Clawed Jird.
Jirds have furry tails and ears and feet. Gerbils which are not Jirds, don't.

Jirds are a type of gerbil, for instance the Meriones gerbils. Your mongolians are Meriones unguiculatis and yes this means they are small jirds. Some jird species get quite large, for instance shaws and persians. A google search or a look at any good gerbil website will tell you more and provide pictures. Jirds are one type of gerbil. There are plenty more (look up on Wickipedia for a list!!). Among my favourites are the Gerbillus. These are true gerbils, of which I keep Gerbillus amoenus, the charming dipodil and Gerbillus perpallidus, the pallid (pale) gerbil, both being Egyptian/North African species.
