Alrighty you lot, put your hand up if you want a Bushy Tailed Jird? It looks like I'm getting a pair of Bushy Tailed Jirds in the not-too-distant future (long story ). However, I only found out yesterday that they are a breeding pair. Now as you can imagine, this changes quite a few things, and there are a lot of new problems that I need to consider, one of these being demand for BTJs. If there is no or little demand for baby jirds, then there is no point in breeding them. I am not going to breed them (ie, I'll have to keep them seperated) if they are just going to sit in my house (where unfortunately I have neither them time nor space to keep tanks and tanks of little jirds), get sent to a rescue centre or end up in a petshop, as it is not fair on the jirds. So I am conducting 'market research' if you like If you (or anyone that you know) would be interested in adopting a pair of Bushy Tailed Jirds in the near future, then please either reply to this thread or send me a PM.

Awww too bad I've had a couple of people interested and apparently bushy tailed jirds aren't prolific breeders (they'll have about 5 litters in a lifetime I've read) and only have (on average) 3-4 pups per litter, so I think I'll be able to find homes for them all Yup, I'll definitely post some photos up when I get them ;D

I would be interested, been looking into them for a long time, but I can't find very good information on there care. Do you have any good websites to recommend Ash? I've been on erodent.co.uk, but I'd like to see a little bit more before commiting to any kind of decision!

Blimey sorry I didn't even realise anyone had replied to this thread! Girlrazor: Hey that's great! They make fantastic pets, they're super friendly and active I've got basically all my information for my BTJs from the E-Gerbil forum (or GSUK forum as it used to be called) here. There's a few members on there who keep them and I've got a lot of good advice from there A lot of BTJ sites aren't really that great. I just googled 'Bushy Tailed Jird' and read as many sites as I could. There's some conflicting information and sometimes it can be confusing, but just absorb the good bits of each website But as I said before, the best place to go is the E-gerbil forum Read a few threads there and you can ask questions too Storminstaffs: Great! They'll be breeding for a while yet, so hopefully I'll have some babies available when you've got the space

I'm in the same situation as storminstaffs with having no available space. they are so cute though and if you have any when I have space I would be interested, after I have researed them properly.
Do they live in a huge cage? and climb rather than dig? not sure if i have the right creature in mind lol

I would be interested.
What size are they about and what's their diet.
They look like a cross between a degu and a gerbil!
Would you send me a pair over if I sent a man who's collecting gerbils for me and hamsters for him, I'd understand if you didn't want to ship, though.
It's just a thought though. My mum saw the pictures and loved them!

I don't think that they'd travel well somehow, they're a bit highly strung and I could imagine them getting pretty stressed, particularly on such a long journey all the way to Ireland (with 20 hamsters and gerbils o_0). I wouldn't really be happy letting them go such a long way, especially with a ferry journey too. They live in a big tank (3 foot) and I'm going to add a cage on top, as they love climbing (and also burrowing! Herb and Milly have dug some great burrows . They do need quite alot of space as they're very active animals, but they're such good fun. Their behaviour reminds me alot of a chinchilla actually, it's very cute Wow I never knew I'd get such interest in them! Right well they'd better have some babies now then! ;D
