They really have big eyes! And is that a pen in there? Do they write too?

I think it is to show their size, isn't it? ;D Personally I cannot see the difference between cheesman gerbils and pallid gerbils, what is the difference exactly? Or is it indeed realy hard to see?

Yes the pen is to give a idea of size as everyone knows how big a biro is.
you could almost imagine them writing though, they wern't going to let my girlfriend Andrea have the pen back after!!.. ;D
The main difference between the cheesman and pallid is the eyes in a true pallid (which are hard to find) the eyes ar smaller, and the tail is shorter and hairless on a pallid compared to the cheesmans very long tail with black streak on the end and fur.
Also the personalities are very different the pallids are laid back when the cheesmans are naughty mischevious little so and so. the cheesmans love to climb up you and groom your hair!!..
If you are after a interesting and entertaining species the cheesmans are definatly it!

Thanks, I did't know that! But I think that it is still hard to tell for me! ;D So the tail is good to tell the difference?
If I had more room, I would certainly want some pallids or cheesmans! I think they look great!

Hi, The tail and eyes are a very good point in noticing the differences, I have a page on our site about the cheesmans and there is a big page with some close up of the differences. Please be patient as the pictures take a while to load freespace.virgin.net/craigivar.poms/chees.htmlWe got our cheesmans of Eddie Cope, but they are lots of hybrid out there so it can be difficult to tell sometimes - but ive never seen a pallid or hybrid with such huge bulging eyes as the 'real' Cheesman. In terms of behaviour and diet they are identical to pallids - a good thing is that these two rarely bite, actually almost unheard off - but i have been told if it should the bite would be much worse than a mongolian's. It is a shame there is very limited information on the web of the Cheesman gerbil, perhaps you could make a page based on yoru pallid info Peter ? Darren

Thanx Darren, those pictures are very helpful! The difference of the eyes is indeed good visible!
It is indeed sad that for some gerbil species not much information can be found on the internet!
But as you suggested, I will make a page of the Cheesman gerbil! I will search for as much information as I can on websites, books, and from experiences of owners, like you! Than I will combine all the information on a web page! I've done the same thing with the Sundevall Jird, Indian Gerbil, Pallid Gerbil, and especially with the fat-tailed gerbil (duprasi)!
So information and pictures are also very welcome! ;D

Hey I'd disagree about the pallids and cheesmans being similar in behaviour from what u have said about your 2 Darren, yours are very mischeivious and seem to squabble more. Check out your posts in this thread, you've contradicted yourself mate! lol Very funny Here is a pic of one of my Pallids, Isis. They are indeed very sweet www.muchos.co.uk/members/Dottyjird/Pallid small.JPG[/img] R8ch

u got me there r8ch, i meant it in terms of digging, amount of bedding and sleeping vs play time. plus i didnt post that 1st quite thats andrea using my log in - shes always over exsagerating their behaviour - they only do funny things when she allows them to, with me they now rest on my lap and try to eat my jeans all day, but then the mongo's do that all day too. anyhows your pallids are mischeive makers too - i remebr getting nipped ( gently) by one of yours

are the cheesman gerbils smaller than mongolians? They're supposed to be. Karus is small compared with most of my Mongolians. Petie is the smallest of the Mongolians and she isn't that much bigger than him, but she's inbred so that could be why she's small.
