hmm.. someone around here had something big like that. Shaw's Jird, I think? They said it was about 3x bigger than a gerbil. Sadly, they got rid of it because it just didn't seem to take a liking to them. ):

My Sister has a Jird, and she's massive! They are quite anti social compared to gerbils, and females at least shouldn't be kept in pairs. She's quite friendy to people though, although its difficult to find things to keep her amused due to her size-e.g. she has to have a chincilla house, and can't fit down rotastack tubes or toilet rolls! She's got a wheel, and loves it, but she always seems a bit bored to me. My sister took her into school to be a school pet, and the kids in her class loved her, so she's pretty cool, and happy with kiddies. She did bite me and draw blood once though... however I had just been eating chocolate....

I actually don't own any of the Jirds, but I breed gerbils for size, I have a 16" (Tail and Body) Gerbils, and it says that a Jird is a bout 26.5" Long with Tail. I'm trying to get 18" right now!!!

Your Mongolian gerbil is actually a jird and one of its common names is the "clawed jird" It is very closely related to a Shaw's jird but the biggest and most obvious difference is the size difference between the two animals. Ed
