Okay! I'm exited.... I might try to make the Sweet tin thingie.... Wheels are too expensive here. I also have a cracked tank that I used to use for Newts living outside.... that's where the gerbies are currently living.

Coconuts are usually in the Grocery stores. I got mine at a SuperWalMart. It was only 1.98 I think.

I bought this kind of wheel www.petsmart.com/global/product_detail.jsp?PRODUCT%3C%3Eprd_id=845524441780556&FOLDER%3C%3Efolder_id=2534374302026368&ASSORTMENT%3C%3East_id=2534374302023695&CONTENT%3C%3Ecnt_id=10134198673267324&bmUID=109989206073then put masking tape around the OUTSIDE of the grid (so they won't slide off while running). It's been that way for weeks now, and they still haven't ripped it off. And to be honest, It's really pretty funny to watch when the tape is new. Their little feet stick to the exposed sticky part and it makes 'em stop and stare, then try again. (It doesn't hurt them, just like us stepping on something sticky on the kitchen floor, but it sure puzzles them! ;D) To solve this problem, I just throw some of their bedding around over the sticky stuff and it covers it up. Oh, and I found a way around PetSmart's price difference between store and online (huge difference!) If you print out the page showing the item(s) you want and the prices, take it with you and show them, telling them you want that price. They'll honor it! (At least, they do here in the Detroit area!)

I just got a new wheel -- Silent Spinner (petsmart) and it is great! No sound at all and the plastic is very hard, so i think it would take a while to chew through (although my gerbs never chewed the old noisy wheel either). I just attach it to the top of the tank using pieces of wire coat hanger bent to form a kind of clip. Of course, if you have a cage, it has a clip for that already. Anyway, just thought i would pass on the info in case some of you are being driven crazy by squeeky wheels.

Kiss the wheel squeak goodbye by spraying a little cooking spray on each of the "joints" where the wheel attaches to the support base. It usually lasts about 1 1/2 to 2 weeks on my, less if they get really rowdy with the cornmeal or bedding! The only problem I have now is my one adult female keeps knocking the darned thing sideways up against the wall and then running!

My Mongolian gerbils never use their wheel! OK, only for gnawing! However, my fat-tailed gerbils love it! They have meatl and plastic wheels, and amazing they are still whole. The mongolian gerbils whould have gnawed it into small pieces!

Ican't get them to use it. But todayI am making a playpen for them so I will try making a whell too. THe great thing about this playpen is that it has a bottom so they can't get out, and the metall is really heavy. I am usng it for their splitter, and they've had it for 5 days and haven't made a HOLE! and they've been chewing constantly. So I can take them outside in the summer while I'm eating lunch. Don't worry. THere is a top too.

When I first got my gerbils, I bought them wheels for their tanks. Unfortunately, all they did was bury it in the bedding. So I took it out. I thought they just weren't interersted in it. It wasn't until I made a playpen for them that I discovered that four or my 9 gerbils actually do like and USE the wheel! LOL, I can ask them to go on their wheel and show me how it works and ya know, they understand me and go on the wheel. Silly gerbs!

I just made a playpen by using a 30 gallon container. And yesterday, I bought a 50 gallon container. Anyways, here is how the 30 gallon one looks like: I need to add some more goodies to it, though. I'm just happy that Buddy and Timmy and Peaches and Sally enjoy their wheel. It seems lately that when I put Sally into the plastic wheel, she get's a boo-boo on her nose. So the playground is a nice alternative.
