Sigs

I think there should be a limit on the size of sigs. There are people who are still using 800/600 screen resolution and when people like Sandy have huge, long stretched out sigs.. It makes it annoying to read threads because we have to scroll back and forth.

I don't post and read much because having to scroll left and right while reading is annoying.

Just saying. Most boards do have automatic limits to not cause this problem.

Maybe you could post a step by step on reducing your sig size (physical and file size)? I;m sure it would be appreciated!

I think it might be a good idea to some extent, but not so much that there is nothing left of the images. I can switch from 800x600 to larger resolutions with a click of a button (because I use Firefox) and I can see the issue. A little large than Doom's sig would be the max without widening the screen with scrollbars for 800x600 users.


EDIT: My sig is the MAX is 800x600 without using scrollbars.

the filesize limit is useful a for those on slow connections it reduces d/load time.
It is quite possible that a gentle reminder to those whose sigs are large (and lets be honest depending on their screen and d/load speed they may not even realize it) is all that is needed rather than laying down rules.
If your not sure of your sig size, btw, just right click on it and lok at properties. Around 150k is about the limit before d/load times start to get unbearable.
One other issue is picture size, it is good manners for you pictures NOT to break the frame.
Please remember we are not picking on anyone here, we are just discussing the need for good forum netiquette so that everyone can enjoy the forum to the full.

Shouldn't the same apply to avatars as well? I know on other forums I vist they have a limit of 100x100 but if you're linking from a much larger image it can also affect the d.l time which is something I worry about as my family back home in Essex are still on dial up, so my connection is slow enough as it is!

I personally have never had problems, but I don't use a 800x600 screen resolution. And ISDN or via cable (depends on where I use a computer), soa lso with the download time I had not problems. But if people do have problems with it, we should do something about it. I can mass PM members about this.

About the avatar: also here an Avatars must be no more than 100x100 pixels. Bigger is not possible, but if it originally a much bigger image, it can indeed affect download time for some people!

Yeah, thanks Peter, that's what I meant about the orginal image, I'm just not very good at explaining myself!

again with avatars if you look at the filesize (right click on picture and click properties you can see how big the image is
Mine is over 30kb ...so is anyone finding it slow to d/load? if so I/ll resize
If an avatar is really big please pop it into photoshop or another image editor and decrease its size!!!
resizing is actually very simple, as is cropping and worth taking the trble to do with ALL pictures.

Same here - its just occasionally the odd posting with bazillions of pics that goes a teeny bit slower

My resolution is set on the highest so everything that people see with 800x600 res., I see MUCH smaller .. You're right there is a way to automatically resize a large picture on other boards, but I LOVE seeing the real size of the pics on this board, it's clearer that way.

I think this "umm" person only posts as a guest when they want to express a strong opinion and are afraid of people knowing who he/she is. I've seen your posts and they're all opinionated. I'm not trying to be mean but I'm just saying that you shouldn't be afraid to voice your opinion, speak your mind and stop hiding behind the "umm" username, people can respect you more for that, but if you still feel uncomfortable who am I to say what to do or not?

it coudl be they post from work or something similar. I know many people have slower connections and older computers at work/college/uni than they do at home. And certainly if your on a puplic system there must be soem concern about possible password stealers and key loggers giving access to you passwords etc. The security of these systems is only as good as the techies that set them up and administer them.

Yup that's very true. But it's the fact that they hide behind another identity. When people sign on as a guest they put their user name or something similar, even if not, they would mention it. But "umm" never once said who he/she is. You can also know that they are a member by the fact that they said "i dont post or read much."
