I don't know, because I only have male gerbils, but I have noticed that one of mine is more of a chewer than the other. If I put a box or a toilet paper roll in the tank, Patrick rushes right over and makes quick work of it. Daryl chews on it some, but nothing like Patrick does!

I don't know. When I had my first litter (3 girls and 4 boys), the girls chewed way faster than the boys. (about 2 months old). The girls would jump around and chew this place and that, but the boys would usually crawl inside the box/roll and sleep. Also, for my adult gerbils, Chocolate, a boy sleeps inside the boxes/rolls I give him. He doesn't even touch it. Maybe a nibble or two, but he leaves it alone and sleeps in it. Ginger, Amy, and May however chews up a cereal box in about 20 minutes, non stop! If they're really feeling up to the task, they can chew it in 10 minutes! Girls are much better chewers than boys!

I have boys, my sister has girls, and I have to say that my boys are lot faster. A 3x4 sheet of heavy cardboard is shredded in 5 min by the boys, but the girls take all day to demolish it.
