It's the Carefresh bedding - the stuff that's made from recycled material and comes in every color in the rainbow.

You had me going there. I personally try to avoid dyes in food and bedding. Just me.

I don't suspect that it will harm them at all, but it's up to you if you want to change their substrate. Someone else had this problem a while back with their gerbil chewing on a coloured wood toy, as the saliva made the dye run onto it's fur Love the last shot - what a poser! ;D Caroline

I think the Carefresh is harmless.

ye probably harmless...i wondered what the gerbils make of it??? lol
with it comin from the carefresh i'd imagine there aren;t that many things that can have made it wet for the dye to run...urine, water from their bottle and saliva, so its maybe time to either change substrate or keep to the uncoloured stuff as i'd say its probably the urine (unless you know that the water bottle is leaking?) just a thought... xxx

The kids think it's funny. It's only about a week old, and not really wet in there. I'm thinking they got that way from just lying and rubbing in it. It's my first time using the Carefresh... thought I'd just throw a little something different in there for them. Guess it will be my last time!

I bet you spend more on carefresh than a large bale of aspen Vicky! Caroline

Carefresh is EXPENSIVE where I am. It's like.. $6 for a little bag, while a big thing of aspen is $4.

That's why I never get it, but I thought a little color might brighten up the tanks. But I was thinking color on the TANKS, not the GERBILS. Ha. Although, if it's non-toxic... maybe I should start doing green for St. Patricks day, red and blue for July 4th, orange and black for halloween & red and green for Christmas. Get the gerbil family into the holidays... LOL!
Wonder how long it will take to wear off.....

My cat got dyed red by her collar{she's white!}, and that took about a week to wear off. We also spilled red wine on her {it was an accident!} and that came off after some serious scrubbing. So it shouldn't take *too* long.
Carefresh also comes in white-- carefresh ultra. =)

LOL about the wine on the cat! That would suck the morning after... waking up with a hangover, and, great, now I've got to give the cat a bath!
