Hello, New to these balls: how can you tell a gerbil is happy inside? Mine are going very fast everywhere does that mean they enjoy it or just try to figure how to get out? Btw very disappointed not to be considered as a member anymore!! (username not recognised)

Mine love to roll around in the balls!! One even slams it into the wall . She hit a wall once and the top popped off. Now she gets a running start and slams into the wall hoping to get the top off. I switch between a playground free roam and the balls. I think they like the variety and change of scenery. Of course, Cowboy, runs around for about 10 minutes then chills out in his little corner. Others, come running over to me when they see or hear me enter the room. Quite endearing .

Which size ball do you guys buy? I think I bought the mouse-sized one. Maybe it's too small? The other ones looked really big, but that was when the gerbils were pretty young

Hi Devun! Here are two piccys of those hamster balls that I currently use: This is one of my fat boys-Bobby. See how big the ball is? I found that the lids don't always stay on so I hafta use alittle tape to keep the lid from falling off. And here is a pic of Billy inside the ball. That's Bubby and Milo checking him out. And yes, I always supervise. ;D I hope this helps. All but 3 of my 9 gerbils enjoy playing in their ball.

thanks for posting those! I can see now that the ball is definitely too small. I bought it when they were really young...

You're Welcome! ;D 3 of my 9 gerbils do not especially care to play in those balls, though. So I made them a playground instead. This way, they all are able to get some exercise. And I've noticed that that the ones who do enjoy playing in the ball, do not like the playground. Go figure.

The dwarf hamster kind is way too small. Mine could only use it as pups then they got older and just looked ridiculous in it.
And when they're not happy they just sit there stiff peeing and using it as a bathroom.

What I tried was to put them in the ball for only about 5 minutes at first, and then a little later, put the ball in the cage to see if they would hop in or avoid it. I figure if they get to go for a spin each time they hop in, they will soon know what hopping in there means and will only go in if they feel like a run-around. So far they push each other away to be the first to get in there. They seem to love it.

I got a hamster sized one-- Nees loves it and Goat just looks confused. It makes sense because Nees loves the wheel and Goat never uses it. I have to tape my door shut too! Nees is quite the escape artist.

mine are the same size as the picture. Only 2 of the 10 I've tried it with seem to enjoy it. My cat's like watching the gerbils in the balls too, but always keep their distance because the gerbils tend to run at the cats in the balls to see what they are, and then the cats have to leap backwards out of the way, lol, to avoid getting rammed. The first time I try gerb's in the ball, the ones that roll around seem to like it (as already said), and the ones that don't like it tend to go to the bathroom. Anyone else notice gerbils poop when scared? Maybe it's a defensive instinct...
