I know I am breeding fancy colours from scratch here in BC using my knowledge of genetics (I am trained as a biologist)) and a sharp eye--and, of course, the valuable pictures available on the Internet from web sites like this one! So far in the flesh I've only seen Agouti, Black, Argente, Dove and White (not sure what kind of white as the genetics were unknown). I discovered my apricot by photographing her and playing with the colour intensity development of the picture on the computer. It showed that she was indeed a pied light apricot, which I could not tell with the naked eye. She just looked like a pearlescent white gerbil (some yellowish patches, some greyish patches) but the picture showed her colours and her patterns: enhanced colour intensity:

If it truly is an apricot, Sandy, that is quite a find! I really hope that she is. Hopefully Crazycritter will have gg gerbils eventually (I gave her my cp slate female). There are ee and gg gerbils in Saskatoon, just to let you know (that is how I aquired my colourpoints because she breeds *everything*).

Wow Sandy, Impressive. I am now trying to load more pictures of Sweetie against different back drops but am having some difficulty getting the photos to photobucket. She looks like a sapphire on the color pallette. She has red eyes also. I would like to breed and I heard that breeding for color and temperment is the best approach. I am thinking of breeding her with Bubba my agouti. Finally the pictures: Queenie have you retired from breeding? Does that mean you will be available to assist me with the genetics stuff when I breed?

I stopped breeding a few months ago. If you want help with the genetics I will be happy to give you some assistance. You have to realize, however, that there are still some aspects of genetics that I don't understand .

Thanks, guys. I am also searching for colourpoints in WA as I saw someone online had one down there they found in their back yard! I am calling around to pet stores. So far no luck. I shall have to wait for crazycritters to breed them and then maybe one of my relatives up there in Edmonton will come visit some time and transport them for me. Sigh..waiting is so hard! However, I have a pup born that is currently developing her colours that is definitely nothing I've seen before. She is pied and black eyed, with a light grey undercoat starting to come in. She seems to carry A and P from her patterns, so maybe light colourpoint agouti, grey agouti or a honey type. She could even be schimmel (champagne). She has a brother that is white, so both parents carry a recessive c gene. What an exciting week I'm going to have!!! When her colour develops I will post pictures and you guys can help me determine what she is.

Sandy, Sound exciting!! I can't wait for the pictures. I bet the pup is beautiful. Waiting is very difficult. I actually have to wait about 3-4 more months to breed mine. I guess it will give me time to do other things though.
Queenie, Thank you. I wish it was not so expensive to call you!! I would love the help! Even if there are like one or two things that you don't know, it's better than the amount of stuff I don't know!! I really appreciate all of your support. Thanks

Thanks, Sweetie. I can also help you with genetics as I have gerbil calculator. Peter can also, he knows a heck of a lot.

Thanks Sandy for the offer. I still have a few months to go. I am trying to decide the best course of action. I want to keep them together but I need to get a website up and running advertise and such so that I can place all or most of the pups I get.

I was just thinking, Sandy. Does your potentially apricot pup have red eyes? If so, it may be spotted ivory cream (aa ggpp). Both the ivory cream and apricot look quite similar (from pictures, anyway ). Either way, you will still be working with genes previously unavailable in B.C. I just think it would be even better if your gerb carried ee (apricot). www.agsgerbils.org/Color_Strip/ivory_cream.html
