Hello,
I am getting my new babies tomorrow and I got the bedding that was suggested by many of you. I have a layer of ground corncobs on the bottom and a layer of aspen over top. When I was pouring it in, it is dusty! Maybe I got a cheap dusty brand or what. Maybe I am being oversensitive, but I don't think so if they are digging in it they will have to breathe it.
Does anyone use the green colored clorophil bedding, maybe it won't be so dusty. Thank you in advance. for any suggestions or tips! Annie

I voted for carefresh. I found aspen was dusty too, plus carefresh seems softer and more absorbent and it doesn't get kicked through bars/wire mesh as easily, and they like to shred it up! (carefresh is the grey paper stuff, right?) as for the daily news, I heard that newspaper ink can be bad for them...

I couldn't get my girls to stop eating the corncob, so I had to take it out right away. They thought it was treats and I've read too many horror stories about blockages. (Also, I thought the smell of the corncob was horrid.)
I use aspen and I do agree it can be a bit dusty, but I find that being careful with the package before using it and trying to minimize the breakage of the shavings helps a lot. If you can keep from crushing the aspen too much in storing and shoveling it, the shavings stay intact and don't put off as much dust.
My gerbils really seem to enjoy shredding the individual aspen shavings, tearing them into tiny strips for their nest, so I didn't want to take that favorite pastime away from them by using Carefresh. There are times when they'll sit in a corner with a little heap of aspen and shred for an hour at a time, totally blissed out. And I give them plenty of tissue to use for soft, fluffy insulation.

oops! just tried to vote -- but it got counted with no selection. The 4th vote was mine and should be for Ultra Carefresh. We like it a lot, but it is expensive....

I've been experimental with some different combinations of bedding. I've found Aspen Pellets to be super absorbent. I use that as a base, as well as a thin layer of corncob. In the large tank, I put an inch or two ofAspen shavings... which are very dusty and never as "fluffy" as they are in the pet store. I have a separate smaller tank that is filled w/ Carefresh... for burrowing and digging fun. They seem to burrow less in the corners now I'll eventually get around to finding out which of the above are the most absorbent of all beddings. But everything usually smells of gerbil first, not their waste/urine when I clean things out.
