My gerbies love flour as a bath and treat. They turn in to little monkeys when they get it. I just tried it. They love it.

Seeing as flour is just powdered grain...I don't see how it could hurt them if they ingested it. But flour is extremly fine, I would be more worried about them inhaling the fine dust. Not to mention they probably look like little ghosts after a good bath in the stuff. I avoid cooking at all costs so my experience using flour is limited...lol, but I think ( I could definatly be wrong) that flour retains moisture rather than drying out quickly like sand. Therefore it would most likely clump and stick to thier fur. It's definatly not something you should reuse.

Flour can cause respiratory allergies (much as too much talc does with babies) Personally I wouldn't use it as it's too fine. Even when I use talc to clean stains for showing I brush it in to avoid too much dust being breathed in by the gerbil Chinchlla sand is best (not bird sand which is sharp and damages individual hairs)

Do Not use flour please! It is the cause of many respiratory illnesses similar to what coal miners suffered. People working in bakeries (the ones making dough, not the ones selling the stuff) often suffer from illnesses due to inhalation of flour dust: www.aafp.org/afp/20011201/1839.htmlwww.hse.gov.uk/lau/lacs/71-1.htm So you can imagine the effects on gerbils!

Hey Paws,
A little late but it is so fine, that it gets in their orifaces and since it clumps with moisture, it is not healthy. You already knew that though!
I just use play sand that I get at the craft store or at WalMart in the craft section (make sure it is not the colored sand!!). It is relatively inexpensive about 2$ for 5 lb bag. It is safe, non-toxic, and they have had no ill effects.
I guess you do have to go to the store to get it and I am not sure of any other small granual substance that you can use. You could just unroll a whole toilet paper toll and let them run through that. It may absorb any extra oils they may have.

I got a 50-lb. bag of play sand for only $2.69 at Lowe's. So if you have Lowe's or something similar in your area, you may want to check it out. The only bad thing about it was trying to lug that 50-lb. bag home!

Bucky & Ginger are using playground sand from the hardware store as of yesterday, and they seem to like it just fine. It doesn't cloud up as much as the chinch sand when they bathe in it, but other than that I haven't noticed any difference except the cost -- Fifty pounds of it was $3.50 USD! I don't know if they'll ever use that much, but they'll have fun trying.
;D
