Well, maybe i'm not a *genius*, but....I'm pretty proud of my solution to my wasted-food problem....hehe ;D Presenting, the wonderous Elevated Food Dish! pic6.picturetrail.com/VOL165/2178388/4246719/76491730.jpg[/img]Sorry for the poor picture quality, I was running out of batteries, and had to take the picture quickly without changing the camera settings. I made it out of a strip of hardware cloth, used to make the gerbil lids, and a ..... Urine Sample cup from the lab my mom works at. I just cut the stip of wire, cut a hole in it, stuck the cup in, filled it with food, and bent the wire so it would hang over the tank. I left some wire at the bottom so the pups could use it as a ladder. Now, they can't get litter in it and since I mix my own food now, I can see what they're leaving and not buy that ingredient next time. ;D

the food dish is totally rocking . They used to bury their food and then I'd get afraid that they'd forgotten about it and were starving to death ... I've got a third level in my wire cage, so I put it there.

Devon, since I added a second story to my tanks (thanks for the idea ), I just place their food in the second story. No burying of the food dish any more. Thier water bottle is also attached to the second story wire cage. It is so much simpler than the setup I had before. The only problem is that Jasper has a big lump on his nose from chewing the bars .

Yeah, I do that with my tanks that have the second level, but most of them don't, so the ones without the second level get the elevated food dish. My gerbils don't seem to like chewing on the bars...Hade's does, but when he does it, he just sits there with his mouth around them, not even chewing...

the only problem with that is you then get some cheeky pallid gerbils that just take the food out of the bowl and bury it anyway Gerbils They are nuts..

I really like the set up . I like the wire for steps . I is amazing how creative we can get trying to maintain our gerbils!!!! Do they like it? I used to do the cage on top but then it got a lot to clean so then I rigged up my own elevated food dish. I actually have a picture on here some where in another thread. They now pile every single shred of free shaving up in to the corner until the dish is covered. I have since given up!!! BAH Humbug!! I think it is quite humorous how they still figure out how to outsmart me!! This one took them a while though.
