Smart Gerbils I definitely subscribe to that theory. One of them loves climbing on the cage bars...don't think he'd want to be in a glass structure, loves the "high ground" lol He climbs like crazy to show he wants his time in the plastic ball...then explores all over the place in his plastic ball for a good 30 minutes...even learning how to slow down now so as to not run into things so much, and definitely getting the hang of controlling it Finch loves his ball. Bosco, on the other hand, can't stand the ball, and tries to jump out whenever we put him in...he does tend to run on the wheel more though in return, though wheel time is a bit more even...both like the wheel. They do love stashing their food, even if it's not buried, at the spot where they normally eat...especially when it comes to corn. I do think this is very smart of them...since they do like corn It may be that they can't quite distinguish the corn so well from the other similar-colored seeds in the mix, or that they just like being hand-fed more...likely, a combination of the two...there is a lot of truth to geikou's statement, but it probably is more because they can't easily smell the corn now that I have thought of it more...the smells of the entire dish come out, not so much the individual items. My gerbils do the same exact thing with corn! In fact, once upon a time, one of my gerbils was collecting corn from me and the other one stole the corn from where the other was stashing it! Confusing, eh?

one of my gerbils does that too. she just seems to stare at nothing and crouch really still and then eventually she will start to close her eyes.
