All you can really do is just try it . Even if something goes wrong, you can just split cage them for a longer period of time. You want to be wary of major fights (ball fights), chasing, squeeking and any other behaviour that looks like they are very uncomfortable with each other. Digging at the divider isn't necessarily a bad sign, many gerbils do that. As for when they are together, if they are boxing a little bit, that is fine. You just don't want that behaviour to escalate. You will want to watch them for several hours to make sure that fighting doesn't break out.

Well I've only done one split-cage intro, so I'm not the voice of experience, but my gerbils dug at the divider and chewed on it a lot, but had no problems when I introduced them. I think it was just something different in the cage to mess with!
Good luck with them! ;D

ok well i took out the didvider today and i think it is going ok although im not sure. At first there was alot of sniffing and eventually they both went to sleep next to each other which i suppose is a good sign right? Molly (the older gerbil) keeps trying to groom misty and i dont know whether she is being a little too rough as misty keeps squeking. There has been no major fighting just small outbreaks that lasted only a couple of seconds. They eat out of the same food bowl and seem ok but i still dont feel safe about it. What do you think is it going ok? Please reply i really need help with this!

It sounds like a successful introduction. Some of my pairs would initially squeak when their new mate groomed them. I think that should calm down in the next couple of days. The fact that they are sleeping together means everything should be just fine.

i was awake nearly all last night panicking in case they were hurting each other. But this morning everything was fine. They slept next to each other and seem to be ok with everything. does this mean i can stop worrying now? Thanx everyone who helped i really appreciate it. ;D

Yes you can stop worrying. One of my eight still squeak. Honeymunch is a squeaky little bugger. I thought when I put him with my 2 boys, they were grooming a bit too hard because he always squeaked but they never fought. I have him in now with a little girl and he still squeaks. I think it's just him. Gerbils actually communicte by squeaking but most often, we can't hear them because of the frequency. Squeaking isn't always a bad sign. Just like humans, some don't talk at all and others don't stop talking LOL.
