Ok. There haven't been any casuties over night. Nutmeg and Dark-Tail are currently ignoring the new commer. Tip-Ex is Tip-Ex. Currently there are 2 nests in the cage and Nutmeg and Dark-Tail were sleeping in the coconut. I have taken the Coconut out cos I want them to intergrate, not ignore each other. I am not sure where Tip-Ex is sleeping. So far I think this is going ok.

So you got the gerbil yesterday? And already let them integrate?
Thats rushing things way too fast. They should have at least been left in the split overnight when you are not there to supervise..

Is this a good sign? I've seen the new gerbil grooming Dark-Tail and chew one end of a toilet roll and Tip-Ex chew the other. I don't think that he is currently being allowed to sleep with them, but I think that is just a matter of time. There also have been no fights since when last said on this board that there was one.

That they start grooming each other is a good sigh! It seems that everything turns out well!

Actully I put Thunder (I finally named the new gerbil) in the bath tub as soon as I got him with the top of a barred cage around him and then introduced the others slowly that way. He only wanted to fight (at the beingining) with Dark-Tail, so I used the water methord for them. Thunder then decided that hed prefer to have friends than be leader and they have been great ever since (thankfully I had the WHOLE day to watch them). He is now totally accepted by the others. I have seen him grooming the others and he is now kinda allowed into the main nest Though at the moment he often doesn't sleep there cos the weather is hot. Quite often when he is asleep in the corner one of the others sit on him!

Don't you think that its amazing, I've owned Thunder for 4 days and he is fully accepted into the group with my 3 other young gerbils? He grooms them, hes alowed to sleep with them and he guards the cage when they are asleep (and he hasn't yet fallen asleep) When I tried the bath methord (at the beginnig) I had one slight problem, though the water was 2 cm deep, Thunder was perfectly happy to walk off the 'Island' AKA Baking Tray and go to the shallow end of the bath. That kinda defeated the point of it... I think that the bath method works because the water temperally gets rid of their smell. One slight problem I hadn't concidered is that when I wired a bared cage to the top of the Duna, I hadn't expected the little uns not to know how to use a ladder... So I've had to put this thing that looks like loads of 5 cm long sticks next to each other (with 2 wires in so you can bend it) for them to climb up to the cage level. Has anyone else had this as a problem?

I don't think it works because of the smell - it's that when they ball fight, they suddenly get drenched, and I don't know about you, but that'd make me stop whatever I'm doing! And as the the wire cage, is there any food up there? That'd sure encourage them to go

Yes, I keep the food and water up there so they don't bury it ^-^

lucky would be a good name, not many people would feel so much empathy for a little chap and want him to have a happy and unlonely life, good on you, sorry about the lame name. My gerbils are called Missy, Jinx, Pepe, Star, Diesal, and Morph if you want to nick one of their names

I eventully called him Thunder. Looking at the now, it's like they have never been apart. When you just keep the gerbils as pets, instead of breeding from them, it doesn't really matter what gender they are, so long as they are the same. Personally I find males better as pets. Unlike females they will sleep outside and groom eachother and play and not ignore each other (Update 17/05/07: All 4 boys are still happily living together with no sign of trouble
