cool, I'm not sure what makes a molted or pied gerbil, all this time i thought the name was border collied gerbil because that's what her coloring and markings remind me of. She'll always be rare and special in my heart because of her adorible personality. ... I only wanted to know if her coloring was, because i had never seen one like her, and was thinking of entering her in to a gerbil show. It's just for fun, get to out of the house with my family and give her a fun day to explroing.

We are down to only two pair of very young adults near breeding age. I do not expect any young ones until mid to the end of summer...
aaggcbcbSp male and female pair SpottedColorPointSlate also called a SpottedSilverBurmese in some circles.
and
aaEeCcbGg male and female pair Just a pair of black gerbils carrying 3 additional genes.
I will not see offspring from any of these for a while. We cut way back once I got the genetics near what we wanted. We use to have 6 pairs. A lot less work when you only have a couple of pairs.

Here is a picture of the aaggcbcbSp pair... The spotted area is mainly on the underside and lighly around the neck and a touch on the forhead. The Sp gene certainly lightens up the darker coloration of the ColorPointSlate. I don't know if you could consider these rare but then with three pairs of recessive genes along with the dominated spotted gene I would say it is heading there. A very long time ago I produced a ColorPointSilverNutmeg that has a link and picture on the gerbils color palette at... home.wtal.de/ehr/gerbils/colors.htm...which you can follow the link back to my gerbil2000 galery. A ColorPointSilverNutmeg is 4 pairs of recessive genes. It did take a very long time to produce starting with animals that only had one or two pairs of the required genes.

In general the term "rare" is difficult to define, the only rare gene in the US now is the dilute gene, the other colors might be rare in some areas at a certain point in time put very common at another time.
In the midwest years ago "ee" gerbils were all over the place, in the northwest it seems like a cycle, sometimes I see more colorpoint gerbils than agouti, other times we see many "efef" gerbils, or other times we see lots of gerbils with the underwhite gene.
