As i said to a few people 2 weeks ago i was going to go and buy a 21 gallon storage box from Wilko when i got there they only had 1 left but it had a broken lid (just the centre had been broken) and i got it for £3.50 instead of £10 Me and my boyfriend 'installed' there old topper onto it so they have maximum digging space and somewhere for the wheel and to climb since Chester loves to climb They've now got a nice 8-9inch of bedding to burrow in The cage is alittle bit different to this now as the bit along the edges between he orange and black platforms is coated in mesh (they don't chew it but just as a precaution) Best of all Chester has stopped picking on Hamish, we've not had any issues since before christmas, He's become alot more submissive when wanting attention !

At the moment my camera is being silly and wont charge so i can't take pictures (and i forgot whilst making it!) But i've drawn a diagram over the top of someone elses bin cage lid (found it on google images) Mines doesn't have all the holes in it It's pretty self explanatory 1. I drew in pencil around the topper on the lid and marked where the ladder needs to sit inside the tub 2. Cut out 2 large areas for ventilation and so droppings aren't falling on to the plastic top too much 3. Drilled holes in the correct places for fixing the topper to the plastic. 4. Put the topper on and attached with zip/cable ties or wire I'm using cable ties but when i clean it i'm probably going to change that too garden wire so i can remove the topper from the lid I've bent wire mesh around the exposed plastic ends just in case they decided to chew it but they don't seem to be bothered about it

Looks great; glad that the new setup has given them enough space that they can have each other without Chester picking on Hamish.

Very lucky boys. It looks great. In that last picture, was one of the gerbils caught mid dig? Looks like a blur. Pretty common for gerbils, though! lol

Mine has no focus at all in that respect, so all my pictures of my boys look like that except maybe two or three. haha Cool when they're caught mid-burrow, though.

Because of this post I was able to make one of my own. I have made bin cages for my hamsters in the past and kept these boys in a bin before but never with an attached topper. Seems to obvious but I never thought about doing it like you did - wiring it to the lid like that. Etc. I needed to shift them to a bin again because we are doing a huge move over halfway across the country (USA)(we are military) and will be in limbo awhile without housing and such until we get settled so I couldn't keep them i their 40 g glass tank for that. I got a 110qt sterilite bin and use the top of a small hamster cage for the topper and did mostly what you did. Thank you so much!
