Hello everyone!I'm going on vacation soon and was wondering if I could bring my gerbil along on vacation with me?Do gerbils make good travelers?I have a small traveling cage(with bedding and food and water)that I could put him in.Our journey ranges from 3-4 hours(closer to 3-3 1/2.)Is it a good idea to take my little boy along and have a new environment for about a week or so?I would rather take him with me than board him at a vet if I can. Thanks, rodentlover

Do you not have someone who could come and feed him and change his water? If you gave him like a tonne of cardboard and stuff he would be fine for a week I think and wouldn't get bored, just get someone to pop in Thats what Im doing when I go away for a week asking my neighbour to pop in a few times

Thanks for your reply;-)Yes I guess I could get my neighbor to feed him and etc.,but my gerbil is so frisky and I'm afraid that if I let someone look after him he may get out and they might not be able to put him back(I'm working on taming him-he doesn't like being held/picked up.)That's why I thought of the idea of taking him with me,as I know his antics better than anyone:-)lol.But thanks for your idea,I will have to think about it; as the thought of traveling with a gerbil does sound like it may not be good for him.....?

i know people that sometimes travel with their gerbils, but they take the whole tank with them (a ten gallon usually fits well on the floor behind the passenger's seat.) a carrier cage wouldn't be big enough for him to live in all week. He may be a little stressed by the trip, but it shouldn't bother him too much I wouldn't think. My gerbils mainly concentrate on their own little environment; if the world outside changes they don't seem to mind so long as they have everything they want/need.
The more pressing concern, I think, is - where are you going? Is it an environment suitable for gerbils and will your gerbil be welcome there? Do you have enough room in your car to pack the tank, all its accessories and a weeks worth of chew toys? If you are traveling with other people, would it be a bother to them to go to all the trouble of bringing it with you?
I heard once of someone who took pieces of paper, put a serving of food in the middle, then wrapped it up and twisted the ends like a candy wrapper. She made enough of them for the gerbils to be fed properly for the duration of the trip, and the person she asked to gerbil sit would just lift the lid, drop in the food bundle, and shut the lid. Shouldn't really be enough time for the gerbil to escape. And it would just take your neighbor about 5 mins twice a day.

During breaks (I'm a student) I bring them back with me (done it with Fang a few times, with Fang and the boys once). It's only like 1 1/2- 2hrs away, but it really doesn't bother them too much. When I brought the three home, I actually think it helped with their bonding- they were a wee bit confused, and snuggled up for most of the journey Rather than bring their tank back, I have a bin cage just for this purpose. It's not as big as their tank, but not tiny, and they're okay in there for the few days/week or whatever. It's much easier to bring the bin cage in and out of cars etc than a tank would be.

i'm the same as nzcage ^ though tonight i am taking them on the train in small carriers. they have holiday homes here that i make sure smell of them before they go in them. my train journey is about 3 hours. the people i got my original girls from took some of their gerbils in their caravan for 2 weeks when they went on holiday! so tonight i'm heading off with 6 gerbils on a train... i've only ever done it with 2! my gerbils have been in smallish box strapped to the front of my bike before... i told them it was an earthquake they were still digging about and chewing, the sweethearts.

Thanks everyone for your help!;-)I really appreciate it. You all gave me some good advice and input:-)Based on what nzcage and oiyou said,I guess it's possible to travel with a gerbil. And thanks eleda for your great idea about the paper wrappers!if I do decide to have my neighbor watch him,I will be sure to use that idea! (I still have time to think about it,but i wanted others view on the situation first.) And in regards to your questions eleda, those are good points. Were going to Florida so it can get quite hot;but theirs always going to be air conditioning for him.Oh and sorry if I didn't make it clear in my question!I should have said:im going to put him in his traveling cage for the journey and Im bringing his other cage along(folded up till we arrive)and will put him in it as soon as we arrive. So he will only be in the small cage for 3-3 1/2 at most. But you all made good points for taking him and not taking him.So I appreciate all the help;-)Im leanin toward taking him,but as I mentioned before,I still have a while to think about it. Thanks again everyone, rodentlover

I leave my gerbils with extra food and cardboard if I am only going for a couple days. Longer than that, someone should check in on them every day.

Some places don't allow gerbils and if you are staying in a hotel, this is probably not a good things to try. Just be aware of your surroundings.
