I have 2 gerbils Skully and Bolt, when I first got them Bolt use to run in his wheel all the time, and really fast (hence the name Bolt) although Skully has never run in it. But after a time Bolt seemed to not run in it much anymore and they started using it as a toilet. Now I got some chinchilla sand which I put in to one of the sections of there cage which they now use that as there toilet and not the wheel but now they've started filling the wheel up with there woodchips instead and dig around in it (They have a burrowing section in there cage as well).
But basically is there a way I can encourage them to use there wheel? and do your gerbils run in there wheel?

My daughter excitedly bought a wheel for our two furry boys and so far....no interest at all. I wouldn't think there's any way of persuading them.

Tillda and Graham don't do wheels either. They're simply not interested. (Which is fine by me, they get exercise at playtime etc.)

Absolutely none whatsoever. I leave it in there for days, weeks. No interest. I always end up removing it only to add it back in to try again.

Mehh I think mine are spoiled and that's why they're picky. When I first brought them home I gave them a mesh tread wheel from WARE that got squeaky very easily, but they didn't care in the slightest. One of my girls adored running on it and the other was only half interested. However, when I introduced a super pet silent wheel and flying saucers the mesh tread was promptly forgotten about and they won't use it anymore.
My boy was scared of all running media but slowly got used to it and loves the super pet wheel. That's my recommendation if you want to try something mine love.

Dusty loves running in his wheel, as does Dakota. Midnight will run occasionally but is more likely to sleep in it which causes some squeeking when Dakota tries to run with him still in it lol

Kate uses the wheel frequently, Caroline does too but not as much. They also use it as a bathroom (argh.) So it has to get cleaned frequently.
Warning TMI: They often run on it after/while using it as a toilet, so the poo gets soaked in pee then gets run on and flattened into big round poo splats. YUK! I started providing a glass jar on its side and a dish of sand all the time, so they use those more for a bathroom. They use the wheel less now (as a toilet) thankfully but I don't think they bother to get off to use the bathroom while they're running.
