I didn't know about Ecotrition either! Just to be clear, this is the Tropical Carnival food you were talking about, right rhianna? I'll purchase some of that next time I have to buy food. Yes, that's the food! It's also available at Petsmart if you have one near you and don't want to order online.

I've feed Ecotrition for years with no negative effects on my gerbils. However, today when I stopped by Petsmart to get some, they were out. I got Brown's Tropical Carnival food for my girls. They will get that mixed with Oxbow Health Handfuls. They enjoy the mix.

chakotay It's great that your gerbils have felt no negative effects from the food. Unfortunately, that wouldn't be the case for everyone. Not every gerbil is harmed by the ingredients that are in it, but a great number of them are. A lot of the effects are long-term, too, so it's possible that you just haven't noticed any issues yet. I think that switching them to TC with Oxbow will greatly benefit their health.

I use a home made mix.
I buy bulk grains, seeds, mealworms and dog food for my mice, rats, gerbils and hamsters... Then I just mix it up differently for the different animals. It is completely corn free, dye free and preservative free.

I'll figure it all up and get back to you. Its difficult to get an exact on how much it would cost you, since I use it for so many animals, but it lasts me a long time.

I may be getting a hammy soon, do you end up using the same mix for both gerbs and hammies, or is there variation?

banditcuster Hamsters actually need a different diet than gerbils. So that would mean using a different mix for the hamster

I also have a question but didnt want to make a new thread. Is it ok to feed my gerbils bread? I know that there are some preservatives in the bread but is there anything to be worried about?

So that would mean using a different mix for the hamster figured but wanted to ask. think until i do more research and am comfortable playing with the food like i am for the gerbs the hammy might be stuck with just nomming Oxbow and tropical carnival mix. (It is a syrian so yay not having to watch sugars as badly as dwarfs...or degus) current gerbil mix: 4# Tropical Carnival 2# Finch seed 1# Oxbow 1# Pasta 1/4# Mealworms 1/4# Puffed cereal mix breeders get about 2-3 cups in another container with extra mealworms and grainfree chicken based cat food mixed in. And on another note I LOVE Oxbow healthy handfuls...though i don't like that it has no insect/animal protien for an omnivore... it makes it great base for making treats for other small animals...

I feed my gerbils sunseed vita prima hamster and gerbil formula. I also add in mealworms, puffed millet, oat groats, flaxseed, and a little bit of millet. This is what it looks like: And this is what it looks like with my add-ins:

Any one recommend anything i could change to that they sell in the UK? Most people in the UK use Gerri Gerbil by Supreme; it's probably the best/most highly recommended gerbil food over there. Another brand I've heard of being used frequently is Burgess Supagerbil Granola.
