The hamster community has gotten involved in persuading Super Pet to create the 8.5" Silent Spinner wheel. They think that the 4.5" wheel should be abolished, since it is too small even for dwarf hamsters and mice. The 6.5 would be the new mini. Please contact them and express your interest in a new wheel. Be sure to say that you would buy it, but that you won't buy the 6.5" for your gerbils because it is too small and can hurt their spines (so currently you are forced to buy from different brands). You may want to tell them that you can't use the Comfort Wheel for gerbils since it is not a tough enough plastic for their constant chewing. Let's do this, gerbil people! The rat community persuaded a company to create a whole new cage (the Critter Nation)!
You can contact them through this e-mail address (the easiest way): customerservice@superpet.net
Or if you want to send them a physical letter then this is their contact address:
Super Pet Attn: Customer Service 2121 Touhy Ave Elk Grove Village, IL 60007
Or if you want to call they have a number too: 1-847-956-1130
They also have a Facebook page. This has generated the most response so far, so please do stop in and leave a post here if you're on Facebook.
Spread the word, for the safety and comfort of gerbils. Please consider even if you don't use Silent Spinner wheels!

I just sent them a pretty long email about it. It's something that has upset me for a long time but never thought of contacting them about it. I really hope they'll actually listen to us and make the 8.5" wheel.

Honestly, I don't like any wheels, regardless of what size they are. My gerbils are fascinated by wheels but only one of them can properly use it. The other one always gets flipped around or whipped up and lands on the metal bars because two are trying to run on it at one time. I just stopped using wheels altogether and give them free range, run/play time every other day for about an hour. Some gerbils do well on wheels. Mine just don't.

Yes, I've heard lots of people who don't, whether it's for those reasons or that their gerbils became addicted to it! I do believe that wheels can never replace free range time

My gerbils LOVE their wheel, all three of them. They have a mesh one. I wanted a silent spinner but didn't buy one because they don't have the 8.5", if they start making it I would certainly buy one. The mesh wheel crossbar whacks them in the face on occasion and the other day one gerbil got kin of squished by it. So I like the idea of a wheel with no crossbar. But I'm not going to buy a wheel that's too small or that they can easily chew through. So I totally support a 8.5" silent spinner. They'd have my business!

So all of you think that the current silent spinner size isn't good for gerbils? I have one and my girls love it, I have heard that its better to do an 8.5" wheel but didn't know it was much of a problem to have a smaller one. .?

Just for my guys, I can't imagine them fitting in anything smaller than the 8 inch wheel they have now. Different sized gerbils could do fine in something smaller, but not mine I don't think.

Crittercrazy: What really matters is the position of their spine. If it's not straight, it's doing damage.

The 6.5" is okay for some gerbils but it's not ideal. Mine outgrew it (mostly Simon; he's a big boy) so they're back to the 8.5" mesh wheels. crittercrazy I know that you have females, right? It should be a fine size for females. Just make sure that their backs aren't arching when they run.

Yes, all girls. Sometimes I guess their backs arch, but I've only noticed it when they're trying to outrun the wheel, which they never succeed in doing. I'll watch the next few times they're running on it and go from there. Thanks!

I really only use the 6.5 when i'm introducing it to pups. I have a mesh wheel in my girl's cage currently and in my old man cage I have a comfort wheel (he doesn't chew it). I really need to get a bigger one for Castiel though , and one for my trio.
I may end up getting soemthing different when I go to the animal expo here in a couple of weeks. My Degus have destoried 3 12inch silent spinners.

I'm going to send in an email, the smallest size really is too small for any rodent. And something in between 6 1/2" and the 12" wheel would be better for gerbils.
