Hello c: I'm fairly new to gerbils-though I've had many hamsters XD anyway,My gerbils name is Felix-he's beautiful. However,I've been informed you should never, ever have one.I strongly disagree ! My friend Roses gerbils tragically died due to fighting.Spike got his eye ripped out by Sebastian. And,the staff at pets at home said that my gerbil had lived on his own all his life, and couldn't be introduced to another ? What do you guys think ?

Gerbils are very social animals. They can become very lonely and depressed if kept alone. This is a general rule and applies to 99% of gerbils.
However, there's always the rare gerbil who doesn't like the company of other gerbils. This would be the case with Sebastian, who decided to fight with his brother. It may also be the case with Felix. The pet store sometimes has to separate a gerbil from a group due to them picking on the others.
Gerbils are very, very different from hamsters. Hamsters usually do fine on their own, and some species will even kill other hamsters, even their family, if kept together. With gerbils, it is usually a health requirement that they be kept in pairs or groups. If your gerbil is one of the few antisocial ones, though, then you can continue keeping him alone, so long as he's not showing signs of depression and he receives a lot of human attention from you.

I have one of those 1% of gerbils that just can't live with another gerbil, although she's a sweetheart with us. I tried to pair her with a friend twice, but neither split cage intro took. She lives in a permanent split 20 gallon long and seems very happy interacting with her neighbor through the divider when it suits her.

I have two gerbils, but they live as next door neighbors in separate tanks with tank toppers. That way, they can see, smell each other. I've had several gerbils over the years, using the same set up. So far, they have all lived long, happy lives.

chakotay, Any reason in particular that you don't keep them together? Gerbils should really live together, not separate, regardless of whether or not they can see/smell each other.
