How much cardboard would you consider being far too much for gerbils? I basically give them enough to fill at least half their tank at the bottom of their gerbilarium. However. I've got 4 in pairs in two different cages, two of them go through cardboard like a wild fire and the others tend too chew some and then leave some. Is the cardboard doing them harm? Will the starve because of it? I provide food aswell lol but my black female gerbil (Oreo) seems too be losing weight. It's like 8 months I think. Is it because of the cardboard? It's healthy and active and nothing noticeable like sores or anything.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but as far as I know: there is no such thing as too much cardboard! Though it is true that some will chew it more then others, I don't think there's any gerbil that doesn't like cardboard. I don't think cardboard could cause a gerbil to loose weight, since they don't actually eat it. But you'll have to watch her and see if she continues to loose weight; something else could be causing that.

My gerbils tend to like thin cardboard packaging better than like, boxes.
I once had a scare where I was an overprotective mama and thought Daisy was losing weight. Some gerbs are chunkier than others, and since males get bigger than females I thought for a while that either Red was fat or the girls were too skinny. It's tough.
If you have a kitchen scale maybe weigh her and see what the magic number is? If it does turn out that the cardboard is distracting her from her diet, which it shouldn't, maybe ease up so she gets her priorities in check. Silly babies!

Cardboard is normally used as a chewing toy, but when used for bedding it tends to become smelly, and fast. If you are using it for them to chew in addition to some bedding you should be fine, and yes, plenty of cardboard is good, but some unchewed cardboard may become buried.
