Yes, at least eight inches is right, but with a wheel that size, it's best to check if their back arches anyhow because it might be a tad small for bigger gerbs. Silent Spinners have both good and bad sides. This is what I found when I researched them a while back. Good: 1- They come in a 12-inch size which is definitely roomy enough. 2- The plastic is thicker than other wheels on the market I have seen. 3- They aren't silent, at least not forever, but if you attach them via the back attachment rather than using the stand, they should be fairly quiet (the stand bangs against the ground I believe). 4- Unlike with wheels like the Super Pets Mesh Run Around Wheel, it has a solid surface (best for their feet, no injury risk) and no crossbar (I've heard stories of one gerbil running on a wheel with crossbar, and another one attempting to step on the wheel and being hit by the crossbar). - Plastic is easy to clean. Bad: 1- Sometimes gerbils can go so fast on them they actually go flying off. 2- Some gerbils won't chew them... some gerbils, unfortunately, will. And plastic is just not safe for them to chew, so you have to remove it if they do. 3- Gerbils seem to think a flat, smooth surface = good toilet. The Silent Spinner is not exempt from this. 4- If you don't secure it properly, it could fall over, even trapping gerbils inside it. 5- The 6.5-inch Silent Spinner is marketed for adult gerbils, suggesting the company don't exactly know what they're even doing, precisely. Hope this helps!

Ooo okay, that's good to know Thankyou so much for sharing your research my two boys like to chew plastic (the tube they used to chew that was plastic had now been removed) so maybe its not the best ;( i want to buy them a wheel but: 1. The may not even use it and like you said they may use it as a toilet 2. If i buy a wooden one the may pee on it and it could get soaked in 3. The only wooden wheel i can find is 11" and cant fit in the Gerbilarium ;( I guess its better to not get them a wheel than buying one thats no good thats a very good point at te end! Thanks again! This was relly helpful. Xxx
