Hi guys,
First post and touching on a bit of a dodgy subject so my apologies.
Could someone tell me what colour gerbil semen is? Basically, is it red like there mucus?
I have two male gerbils (Barney [dominant] and butters [submissive]) and have had them about 18 months now but Barney's lebido is ridiculous which may or not be the issue I have here. All he seams to do all day is hump his brother and masturbate.
He will stalk Butters and get up behind him and hump, it isn't scenting, it is humping. His focus/thrust is not aimed towards his scent gland, he even squeaks rather loudly whilst doing it. Butters used to just run away and now and again try and do the same back but now he just sits and takes it. Barney will then proceed to grab is penis and rub, lick, bite, chew it for a few minutes (rather gross to witness). It may take a while before he gets himself into a comfortable position but he is very dexterous. It used to be every now and then but it is getting ridiculous, all day every day (whenever he is awake).
The other day I noticed that Butters had what looked like blood at the base of his tale/back. I instantly thought barney had attacked butters but when I inspected his back there did not appear to be a wound and butters didn't mind me prodding about in there, or at least no more than he would normally mind being man handled, damned tenacious animals.
I had a look at Barney to see if he had injured himself during a "session" and he appeared to have a red tinge to his fur round his genitals consistent with him humping his injured brother. We have a glass topped cage too which the pair of them pee on when we get them out. Barney's urine is fairly standard in colour, no red tinge.
The next day butters's fur had cleared up and all was normal again, since then I have noticed the same thing a few times, I will check butters for damage but he looks fine and in good spirits. The two are getting on and sleep together etc.
Now I am thinking that since butters isn't resisting any more, Barney is able to complete his love making to Butters's back and what I am witnessing is the result of that "brotherly love" so to speak. Is this plausible? If not i am going to have to consider splitting these two up.
Whether it is the issue or not is there any way of reducing Barneys libido? Could it something environmental or stress related which is making him act this way? It must not be comfortable for him being so pent up.
Thanks for any advice!
Elliot
