This questions comes from a sleepless night. I'm sure the heat here had to do with it too, but last night/this morning, I only got maybe 2 hours of sleep. My gerbils, Yuna and Rikku, are so loud at night. I was told gerbils were Dinural, meaning they wouldn't be up all night, but they have been.
Anyways, past being lied to comes my question. Would taking the wheel out be mean to them? I could leave it in at night, and put it in their play bin I made them to get a change of scenery once a day. The wheel is the main issue because they dig out all the bedding around it and then it bangs agains tthe glass because it is lopsided. I fix it and they just dig it out again.
Bringing up the play bin, if I took a picture and posted it here, could someone give me feedback on the possibility of it being a home? I think it would make less noise then their current set up.

Not sure if you still need help but I had the same issue! I actually found a weight (non toxic of course) and placed it on the bottom of the wheel that way when they dug it out or ran like crazy it was heavy enough to keep it in place. Its been working so far, they were curious and nibbled on it for the first day for a bit but not they basically ignore it and not more banging! Hope this helps

I know this is an old thread but I wanted to offer this advice: use twist/zip ties to adhere the wheel to the screen cover(if you have one). Also, coconut oil is great for lubricating noisy wheels.
I'm an extremely light sleeper so I'm thankful my gerbils are on the other end of the house.

Hi, I have started sleeping in the same room as my gerbils for about a month and a bit now, Yes the gerbils do have a silent spinner but On of my gerbils runs on it that fast that it's not silent anymore. So yes I do take it out at night and put it in during the day. Gerbils are dinual animals which mean they are active day and night, so they still have it in during the day. It's not mean at all don't think that! As long as they have it in during the day they will be fine!
P.S if the Link does not work down below and you want to join the group is called: Gerbil Apprecitation Group Thanks
