Well I'm sad to say Stewie took a turn for the worst and died last night in my hands. I'm glad he's not suffering anymore but I will miss him terribly. Especially his neck snuggles

Oh dear I'm really sorry to hear that your little one died. I really think you did everything you could for him.
I had a lovely healthy adult male suddenly get ill with diarrhoea too, he was ok in himself for a few days but couldn't throw it off and died eventually. It's really hard to watch. I decided not to give the medicine from the vets either as it was causing him distress and I felt it would not change the outcome. In the end he died peacefully in his own time, in his own home and with his friend there. He had the warmth of your hands and your familiar smell as he died which was the best you could give him.
I think that gerbils are not generally ill so if they do get an ailment like that its usually irreversible by the time you realise. Not always, but usually.
I'm rambling now! Sorry again to hear about Stewie.

Thank you. Poor Brian seems rather out of sorts - I have found a new companion for him that I will collect tomorrow so I hope he'll perk up.

I think he's just sad - he's eating, drinking and playing (at night). During the day he spends a lot of time in his house sleeping. He seems to have become very timid suddenly.

lone gerbils can be more afraid so I'm sure a new friend will cheer him up!
