Hi,
My male gerbil is nearly two years old.
I just returned home from work to find my male gerbil still in his bed, very lethargic. I offered him cheese and he completely refused then took a tiny bite out of an apple.
Last night he was running around fine, very active and this morning he seemed absolutely normal.
He's a bit wobbly, his fur is very ruffled, his eyes are a bit closed, he seems to have no energy and is walking low to the ground, i put him in for a sand bath and he wont even shake, he seems to be that ill. Hes also smelling a bit like urine but he isnt wet. Theres no nose discharge/eye discharge and no diarrhea/blood etc...he keeps heading straight back to bed and i dont think hes drinking either.
This has come on VERY suddenly, his breathing is also fairly slow but he's still in bed with my other boy who is bouncing around!
I have got a vets appointment tomorrow night, i think he may have to be put down but im wondering, what could be wrong? My gerbils are cleaned out every 2/3 days practically, fed well, get out for a run every night. Is it possible that whilst out running in my room hes eaten something?
Im worried because i dont want to have him put down if this is something he can get over but he looks seriously ill. The vets around this city arent too great with small animals so i never like to trust what they say, theres been many a time theyve sent me home with antibiotics and the next day my gerbil has died/has remained ill which just prolongs their suffering so if they ever go up to the vet, its usually only to get put down unless they have something like a respiratory/ear infection/wound etc obviously
Can anyone help?

I can't help with what the problem is but can only say I'm sorry to hear he is unwell. I would be inclined to keep him warm and comfortable until the vets and then put him to sleep. He is quite elderly and I've realised when they start to get weak/stop eating/drinking then they go downhill very fast.

Just an update, his cage mate now has blood coming from his ear. I THINK the ill gerbil may have bitten him but im not sure, this is the first time any of my gerbils have had that kind of problem. Well, vets it is then, for both, thank you Becky, room is warm, hes eaten and drunk a little, will just have to see!

Gerbil magically recovered, he's absolutely fine now, as is his cage mate, quite possibly the best day ever! Ha!
