As some here know, I'm new to the gerbil world, we've had Pepper and Joey for, I think 6 weeks or so now.
When we got them, I immediately put a glass jar on it's side up in the cage topper as a potty.
Pepper quickly got the hang of going up in the topper, and right away he chose to use the jar, so there was never more than a couple little poops on the cage topper floor, and no pee.
Joey initially didn't go into the topper, and so of course he did his business down in the tank somewhere.
Eventually, after a few weeks, Joey got the hang of going into the topper, so I moved the food and water up there permanently.
I did see joey use the jar a few times, and I thought all was great.
Unfortunately, it didn't take long until all the potty training went out the window. Both gerbils started doing their business on the opposite side of the topper, on the floor. (the jar was initially on the front side, and I thought maybe they preferred being on the back side where it's more 'private' and secure feeling)
I moved the jar over to that side, but they still just go on the topper floor.
They use the jar all the time... but just to take their food into and eat! It's just got a lot of food remnants and a few poops in there every day. They do poop/pee in there a bit, if they happen to be in there at the time i guess, but mostly they just poop on the floor.
I think they must be peeing mostly in the tank as I have found that their bedding is a little more smelly now than it was for the first few weeks ... first full cleaning was at 2.5 weeks and there was no smell at all other than normal wood smell. Now about 2 weeks after that full cleaning and I just did a partial bedding replacement last night as it was smelling a little bit.
Anyhoo.... any tips on how to get them back to using the potty like they were initially? Seems like once Joey started going up top, Pepper decided to not use the jar anymore, and I guess Joey never really did use it a lot.
It's not a huge issue, as it's easy to use a dust buster to vacuum the poops out every night (and the poops they kick out onto the carpet), but it was much nicer (and less smell) when they used the jar.
