I have two gerbils and had them for over a year now. The only problem I have with them is the fact that they chew everything and when I say everything I mean everything. They chew wood, paper, metal, and plastic. I already took out the wheel because they chew that (this was a long time ago). Just a few days ago I heard my gerbils making a lot of noise. I went into there cage and then looked around. Their water bottle was on the floor. I had put the water bottle on a velcro and it had fallen off. I picked it up and it felt really light. I realized there was no water! I felt the substrate and the substrate was all wet. They has chewed a hole and not just a small hole in there water bottle. They also chewed some of the nozzle. I had to go and buy a new water bottle. I know that different gerbils are different but is there a way to stop there excessive chewing?

I'm afraid that owning gerbils comes with its cons, though there aren't many and the pros all make up for it. However, excessive chewing can be a problem! I've had gerbils the same way. And really, there's nothing you can do to stop them from chewing, only to keep it from being destructive. For the water bottle, I would suggest using a metal holder for it. It is all metal and covers the entire water bottle (so they can't chew it) as well as eliminating the need for the velcro as it can be hung from an aquarium. For the wheel, try a mesh one. They won't be able to chew the metal. Other then that, just make sure they have plenty of wood to chew, and try to avoid using anything plastic. Hope that helps!

Yes, yes they do. Use a glass bottle.

I do have a metal holder but I had taken it off thinking that velcro will be simpler. The problem with mesh is that they might chew the paint off it as they had done for this metal rod. I am planning to buy wood items. Im going to get two more wooden huts so they can have an two floors. My gerbils have cause lots of problems and sometimes it is overwhelming but I still love them. I can't blame them, they are curious little creatures.

I use a glass bottle and a metal holder. Also, I give them a lot of cardboard and wood to chew on.
Best wishes,
Daisy
