Hi everyone. I got a little pied black gerbil in December, and he has the absolute sweetest temperament, so I decided to breed him. I am in the process now of selecting a female. I read a little bit about gerbil genetics, and I don't understand something I read about the spotting gene. I read that gerbils cannot have an SPSP gene since it is prenatally fatal. Does this mean that I must select a female that has no spotting? Or is it okay to get a spotted female? I don't really care if the pups are spotted or not, I just want them to be healthy and as sweet as their father. If anyone has some experience with this I would appreciate your feedback!

Its fine to get a sp female. The SPSP just doesnt work out, but both nale and female would have SPsp or however its written. That means they're heterozygous (one of that gene) and you will simply have either spotted or non spotted gerbils.

Breeding 2 spotted gerbils together doesn't have any negative effects on the litter or the babies that are born. The genetics for prenatal problems all happens right at the early stage of the egg development - so you won't see any effects of this in your pups.
