Has anyone used oxbow regal rat food to feed their gerbils. On the oxbow regal rat food it says the food is also good to feed hamsters and gerbils of all ages.

The food looks all right nutritionally, but if you can find a good mixed food and you don't have big selective feeders, variety is better.

Its a wonderful food for rats. But they make oxbow healthy handfuls for gerbils I would recommend that. Well its technically for hamsters and gerbils. Itd great for hamsters too but the protein is low for them.
Seed mixes seem to be a bigger hit though as long as ( as stated) they are not selective feeders, plus seed mixes tend to be less processed which is better.

I am aware of the oxbow essentials healthy handfuls for hamster and gerbils. Has anyone mixed the oxbow essentials healthy handfuls for hamsters and gerbils with the oxbow regal rat food to feed their gerbils?

I compared the ingredients of the who as well as fat, protein and fiber.
They are VERY different foods, Oxbow rgal rat Adult ( as they have an adult and a young rat formula) The protein is the same, fat is comparible but protein has an 8% difference and the ingredient list is very different. I cant help but think the rat food is only labeled for rats and mice for a reason and that lack of fiber could be a big problem.
is there a reason you are wanting to use oxbow regal rat over other foods?

I got my information from the Petsmart website. Here is what they listed for information about the Oxbow Regal Rat Food.

the Rat formula from Oxbow is too low in Fat. It only has 4%. Your target should be 12% protein and 7% fat. A lot of people don't like for Corn to be in the top 6 ingredients but I believe that it is in the top 4 ingredients for Gerri Gerbil so basically you dont want the major ingredient to be corn cause it's kind of junk.
Also for Oxbow Rat food it has fish protein and I am not sure if that is okay for Gerbils. You may need to do research. I know some people use cat food as an ingredient in their small animal homemade mix so the fish protein may be okay.
Here is what the nutrition and ingredients are listed for Oxbox Essentials Regal Rat food at Petsmart.com

You are going to trust the petsmart website? Everyone knows not to trust pet stores or their websites. Odd that 7% fat is brought up because even oxbow healthy handfuls only has 4.5% And I just read my bag of rat food ( adult regal rat) and it has listed 2-5% fiber, my healthy handfuls lists 10-15% protein ... So something is up about wherever you got that guaranteed analysis, unless its of the young rat food.

Right now I'm using a mix of Oxbow Gerbil, rolled oats, and sunflower kernels. I've tried using the Oxbow Young Rat/Mouse in the mix as well, but my gerbils really don't like it.
