So I have three young gerbils that I adopted at three months old. After a couple of days with them I noticed that one squeaks a lot. It sort of sounds like a bird chirping most of the time through out the day but occasionally it's as if she's in pain but then when I'm handling her she seems fine.
The other two never make a sound and they don't fight a lot but she is the most submissive.
The only things I can think of is that she is quite (too put it bluntly) a stupid gerbil, she walks into walk, trips over thing, jumps and misses basically just all round misjudging distance which I think could be because she is quite light colour and has red tinted eyes so might not have as good sight as her sisters. Her hearing however is perfectly fine.
The only other reason I can think is she might just be very vocal.
A few things that could be factors but I don't quite know is:
Their cage is in my bedroom where there is normally me and not too loud music playing
They live on the brown carefresh substrate
They are about four or five months old now
They live in the same room as some very loud male rats
They are living in a cage that used to have a lone male gerbil (thoroughly sanitised since then but in the same place)
She is a bar chewer but her teeth seem fine and she is eating properly
If you can think of anything at all it would be great no matter what it is. I would take her to the vet to get checked but there are absolutely no vets in my area that know much about rodents so unless there is something obviously wrong or I go in with some idea they are pretty much useless.
Anyway thank you for your help, I really appreciate it!
